Choose on-site service when the device is important enough that shipping it away would seriously disrupt your work or household, and your contract confirms on-site coverage for that exact model and address. Choose depot service when you can manage without the device for a while and the depot option is cheaper or otherwise better suited to your situation. Neither route comes with a guaranteed repair date, so the decision should rest on the written terms for your device, not on the label alone.
What the two service models actually mean
Warranty providers use “on-site” and “depot” to describe where the repair physically takes place. The difference matters more to your daily routine than the name suggests.
| Factor | On-site service | Depot service |
|---|---|---|
| Where the repair happens | At the covered location. Lenovo’s US overview describes parts-and-labor repair at the place of business, and its global brochure extends this to a home (Lenovo, Warranty & Protection). | At a designated repair center. The device is shipped, carried, or otherwise delivered there (Lenovo’s 2023 Warranty Services Brochure). |
| Usual trigger | Remote phone or online support cannot resolve the covered fault. ASUS describes local onsite service on that basis (ASUS Official Support). | The provider routes the repair to a depot, either as the planned service model or after an onsite attempt fails. |
| Who moves the device | Nobody. A technician comes to you. | You or a carrier. Lenovo’s brochure says it pays shipping to the depot for the depot option it describes, but whether packaging and return shipping are included depends on the specific plan. |
| Stated timing | Lenovo says a technician is dispatched “typically the next day” once the issue is judged covered and cannot be fixed by phone. Fujitsu’s US plan promises next-business-day onsite repair for specified parts of the US and Canada. ASUS says dispatch is generally by the end of the next business day. | No repair-time commitment for depot service was stated in the terms reviewed for this guide. |
| Geographic limits | Often tied to location. Fujitsu limits its next-day onsite promise to specified US and Canada areas, and AppleCare for Enterprise requires that the site fall within covered postal codes. | Depends on which repair centers the plan uses. Not stated in the terms reviewed for this guide. |
How to decide, step by step
- Price the downtime. Estimate what it costs you to be without the device for a few days. Include lost billable or work hours, the time spent packing and shipping, and the trip to a service center if one is required.
- Compare that cost with the actual offer. No current, comparable price gap between on-site and depot upgrades was established for this guide, so do not assume on-site always costs more. Get the quoted price for your device and country and compare the two plans side by side.
- Confirm the device qualifies for on-site. Eligibility depends on the model, serial-number entitlement, country, and service address. If any of these fail, the on-site option is not available to you regardless of what the marketing says.
- Decide whether the timing is a target or a completed repair. This is the step most buyers skip (see the next section).
- Assume a depot route is possible even with on-site coverage. Plan for the worst case you can tolerate.
When on-site is the better choice
- You have no spare device and the machine is needed for paid work or essential tasks every day.
- Packing and shipping would take time you do not have, or the device is too large or fragile to move comfortably.
- Your address falls inside the covered area and the plan confirms it in writing.
When depot is the better choice
- You have a backup device or can work without this one for a while.
- The depot plan costs less, or the on-site upgrade adds cost you would not use.
- You can package the device safely and have a practical way to ship it out and back.
What “next day” really promises
Lenovo states that its service descriptions are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed (Lenovo Warranty Entitlement FAQ). In practice, that means a technician arriving the next day is a target, not a completed repair. Completion can take longer if a part is not in stock or if the fault turns out to be more involved than the first diagnosis suggested.
The time clock also depends on when the provider makes its decision. Apple’s AppleCare for Enterprise terms tie onsite availability to Apple’s determination that repair is needed, and the timing depends on when that determination occurs (Apple, AppleCare for Enterprise Service). A call placed late in the day can therefore start the clock later than you expect.

How an on-site plan can still send you to a depot
- Remote diagnosis first. Lenovo and ASUS both describe dispatch only after remote support fails. Budget time for that phone or online step.
- Fallback to depot. Fujitsu says it may require depot repair if an onsite attempt does not solve the problem.
- Repair-type routing. Lenovo notes that certain notebook repairs may be performed at a depot.
- Partial coverage. Lenovo states that not every machine type and model is covered by every service level.
Checklist before you book a visit or ship a device
- Confirm the model and that the serial number is entitled to the plan you are buying.
- Check the country and the exact service address against the covered area.
- Note the business-hours coverage, the response clock, and the dispatch cutoff time.
- Read the list of excluded repair types.
- For depot service, confirm who pays for outbound packaging, shipping, and return shipping.
- Back up important files before any service, and follow the provider’s preparation instructions.
What the evidence does and does not establish
No independently attributable statistic comparing on-site and depot outcomes, such as completion rates or average downtime, was found in the provider documentation reviewed for this guide. The published terms show differences in how each route works, but they do not show that one route repairs devices faster or more reliably across the board. Provider terms also change, and the Lenovo brochure cited above is dated 2023. Treat the wording here as a guide to what to check, and confirm the current terms for your model and country before you rely on them.
If an on-site upgrade is on the table, ask the manufacturer or provider directly whether it is available for your device and location. That question has a more reliable answer than any general comparison.
