Some older homeowners can earn a credit or voucher toward their property taxes by completing volunteer work assigned through a local government program. These are local programs, not a nationwide benefit: eligibility, available placements, credit limits, deadlines and tax treatment vary by community. Contact your assessor, council on aging or senior-services office to find out whether a program is available where you live.
How volunteering can lower a property-tax bill
In a property-tax work-off program, an eligible homeowner completes approved work for a municipality or an approved nonprofit. The program then applies an earned credit, abatement or voucher to the homeowner’s property-tax liability. The credit is generally capped, and the work must meet the program’s rules; it is not an unrestricted payment for any volunteer activity.

Programs in Boston, Pueblo County, Southborough, Springfield and Sharon illustrate how much the terms can differ. Their rules are examples for those jurisdictions, not a guide to eligibility elsewhere.
Examples of local programs
| Program | Who may qualify | Potential benefit and work | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boston, Massachusetts, FY27 | Applicants must be at least 60 by January 1, 2026. The city lists gross-income limits of $69,480 for a single applicant and $79,440 for a married applicant. | Up to $2,000, calculated at $15 per hour for up to 133.5 hours. Work may be assigned at City Hall, Boston Public Schools, Boston Centers for Youth & Families and other municipal offices. | The applicant must have owned and occupied a Boston residential property as a principal residence for at least three years. Trust-held property has additional requirements. The credit cannot exceed the tax still due after other exemptions. The FY27 application cycle is closed. |
| Pueblo County, Colorado | Applicants may qualify at age 60 or older or with a documented disability. The county also sets owner-occupancy and monthly-income requirements. | Assigned work at approved nonprofits or county food-distribution programs earns a property-tax voucher. | A background check and application materials are required. Applications are accepted on a specified date until the program fills; acceptance does not guarantee participation. |
| Southborough, Massachusetts, FY 2026–2027 | For senior homeowners; the town gives preference to applicants earning less than $45,000 annually. | Up to $2,000. Past tasks have included data entry, reception, office and classroom assistance, and building maintenance. | Check the town’s current program terms and application cycle before relying on the maximum. |
| Springfield, Massachusetts, 2026 cycle | Eligible seniors and veterans age 60 and up. | The city lists a maximum of $1,000 for 67 volunteer hours. Work is paid at minimum wage and the amount earned is applied as an abatement. | The city says withholding and other deductions affect the amount. Confirm how these apply to your award and bill. |
| Sharon, Massachusetts, FY2027 | Applicants generally must be at least 65 and meet the town’s conditions, with a veteran exception. | The town sets different maximum reductions by income level. | Applicants must own and live in the home for the full year, reapply annually, and qualify for a placement based on department needs and their qualifications. |
Eligibility and placement are not automatic
Age alone may not be enough. Depending on the locality, eligibility can turn on income, owner-occupancy, how long you have lived in the home, whether it is your principal residence, disability or veteran status, and household circumstances. A property held in a trust may have additional rules, as Boston’s FY27 program illustrates.
#1 Best Overall
Even if you meet the stated eligibility rules, a position may not be available. Programs can assign work according to departmental needs, skills and schedules; some require screening or a background check. Possible roles include reception, administrative work, outreach, library research, school activities and help at events. Ask what placements are currently open, whether tasks can be adapted to your abilities, and how many hours and what schedule are expected.
What to confirm before applying
Ask the program administrator for the current rules and application materials. A local program may be managed by the assessor, council on aging, senior-services office or another municipal department. Verify these points before counting on a credit:

Deadlines and when the credit appears
Application and work deadlines can determine which bill receives the credit. Boston’s FY27 application FAQ says work completed by November 6, 2026 counts toward the FY27 third-quarter bill, which the city expected in late December 2026. That schedule applies to Boston’s program and should not be assumed for another locality. Boston also says its FY27 application cycle is closed; check the city’s page for any subsequent cycle rather than submitting against an expired one. Other communities set their own application periods and posting schedules.
