Choose Okta Workforce Identity for managing employee, contractor, and partner access. For customer sign-up and login, compare Auth0 with Okta Customer Identity (OCI)—two distinct customer-identity offerings under the Okta umbrella. The right choice depends on who signs in, how much your application needs to customize identity flows, whether business customers need their own identity providers, and which features and contract terms your deployment requires.
First decide whose identities you need to manage
“Okta vs Auth0” can mean three different products, not a direct contest between two equivalent platforms:
- Okta Workforce Identity is aimed at employees, contractors, and partners. Its listed capabilities include single sign-on (SSO), multifactor authentication (MFA), device access, directory services, lifecycle management, identity governance, and privileged access. See Okta Workforce Identity and its Plans and Pricing.
- Auth0 and Okta Customer Identity are for customer-facing authentication and identity: for example, sign-up, login, account recovery, and access to a customer app. Okta says the two products run on distinct platforms. Its characterization of OCI as “enterprise-first” and Auth0 as “developer-first” is vendor positioning, not an independent performance finding. Read Okta’s comparison of Customer Identity and Auth0.
If your immediate problem is employee access, start with Workforce Identity. If it is login for people using your product, compare Auth0 and OCI instead; a workforce-versus-customer comparison does not settle which customer product is the better fit.
How to choose between Auth0 and Okta Customer Identity
Match the implementation style to your team and architecture
Okta describes OCI as aimed at IT administrators seeking out-of-the-box policy and lower-code configuration, and Auth0 as offering developers granular, code-based customization, including through Actions. That is a useful starting point for evaluation, not a promise about implementation time or effort in your environment. Test the flows your application actually needs, including how your team will maintain custom logic.

For B2B apps, test organization and federation requirements
Auth0’s Organizations offering supports B2B workflows with organization-specific login and customization through APIs and SDKs. It may be relevant when each business customer needs distinct membership, branding, administration, or identity-provider settings. Confirm the features and limits available on the plan you are considering on the Auth0 Organizations product page.
Auth0 documents enterprise identity-provider support for providers including Okta, SAML, and OIDC. Its documentation says B2B and Enterprise plans permit unlimited Okta Enterprise Connections, subject to system limitations. “Unlimited” therefore does not remove the need to verify plan entitlements, technical limits, or how your specific federation flows will work. See Auth0’s Enterprise Identity Providers documentation.

Compare the requirements that affect your deployment
Before choosing, write down the requirements for the customer or workforce journey in scope, then validate each against the relevant product and plan:
- Which people will authenticate: employees, contractors, partners, individual consumers, or users belonging to business customers?
- Which protocols, applications, and identity providers must be supported?
- Do you need MFA or phishing-resistant authentication, employee lifecycle controls, governance, or privileged-access features?
- Does the product require custom authentication logic, organization-specific behavior, or B2B federation?
- What audit and log retention, support, service-level, compliance, deployment, and regional requirements apply?
- How many environments, tenants, organizations, or connections will you operate, and which limits or entitlements apply to each?
- Is the commercial basis a workforce seat, monthly active user (MAU), annual platform commitment, usage-based add-on, or a negotiated contract?
Confirm feature availability, region, service levels, plan limits, and contract terms directly with the vendors. The published pages do not establish a neutral head-to-head security benchmark, total-cost study, or comparative deployment-time result.

Can you use Okta and Auth0 together?
Yes. Auth0 lists Okta as an enterprise identity provider, so an organization can use Auth0 for customer identity while connecting an Okta identity provider for an enterprise customer’s users. Auth0’s documentation says B2B and Enterprise plans allow unlimited Okta Enterprise Connections subject to system limitations. Validate the exact connection type, plan entitlement, organization behavior, and federation flow for your use case in the Auth0 documentation.

| Offering | Published price and terms | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Okta Workforce Identity | Starter: $6 per workforce user per month; Essentials: $17 per workforce user per month. The listed suites are billed annually, and Okta notes a $1,500 annual contract minimum. Higher suites require a sales quote. | Which workforce features and add-ons are included, the number of seats, and the annual contract terms. Source: Okta Plans and Pricing. |
| Okta Customer Identity | Enterprise base: $3,000 per month, billed annually. B2C/B2B suites and add-ons have separate pricing; Okta describes usage-based add-on pricing and an annual contract requirement. | The appropriate B2C or B2B scope, usage-based add-ons, and total annual commitment. | Auth0 | Essentials: $35 per month; Professional: $240 per month. The page also lists a Free option and Enterprise-by-quote plans, with separate B2C/B2B use-case choices and plan-specific included usage and features. | Use case, MAU entitlements, feature limits, and whether a self-service or quoted plan fits. These starting figures do not represent equivalent scopes: Workforce Identity is priced per workforce user with annual billing, OCI has an enterprise base with separately priced suites and usage-based add-ons, and Auth0 shows monthly tiers with usage entitlements and custom enterprise options. Quick Recap
Best Value
A practical decision rule
- Choose Okta Workforce Identity to evaluate when the central need is employee, contractor, or partner access and identity operations.
- Compare Auth0 with Okta Customer Identity when the central need is authentication for your product’s customers. Evaluate customization and operating model against your architecture rather than assuming vendor labels determine fit.
- Evaluate Auth0 Organizations and federation behavior when business customers need their own identity providers, organization-specific workflows, or administration.
- Consider a combined setup when customer authentication and enterprise federation both matter; verify that the documented connection and plan limits cover your design.
