Brent crude moved above $105 a barrel during Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, trading, as reports of possible U.S. strikes on Iran added to concern about disrupted oil shipping. Prices eased from their highs after President Donald Trump said the United States would not attack Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. U.S. stocks closed mixed, not uniformly lower.

What happened in the oil and stock markets on Oct. 8?

Oil climbed as traders weighed renewed Iran-related supply risks alongside a separate threat to U.S. Gulf production from Hurricane Isaias. After Trump’s statement, prices retreated from their intraday peaks but remained elevated at the close.

The equity-market picture varied by index. The Associated Press attributed some pressure to higher oil prices and technology-stock losses; NBC News also cited technology-sector news. Those reports point to multiple influences, rather than establishing oil as the sole cause of the declines.

Where did Brent, WTI and major stock indexes finish?

Reuters reported the crude settlements below for Thursday, Oct. 8. Brent is the international benchmark; West Texas Intermediate (WTI) is the U.S. benchmark. The intraday levels reported by AP and NBC News/AOL are separate from the closing prices.

Market measure Oct. 8, 2026 result
Brent crude $104.28 per barrel at settlement, up 4.1% (Reuters)
WTI crude $91.49 per barrel at settlement, up 3.6% (Reuters)
Brent crude, intraday Nearly $106 per barrel (Associated Press)
WTI crude, intraday Approached $93 per barrel (NBC News, republished by AOL)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.1%, and the Russell 2000 was up less than 0.1%. The S&P 500 fell 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.3%, according to the Associated Press. These are closing changes for Oct. 8, not a description of every index’s intraday trading.

Did Trump decide to strike Iran?

No final decision to strike was reported. The Atlantic reported on Oct. 7 that the White House had asked the Pentagon to develop strike options, while also reporting that no final decision had been made. Preparing options is not the same as ordering an attack.

On Oct. 8, Trump posted: “We will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd,” and said there were “productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” NBC News/AOL quoted the statement. His pledge narrowed the near-term possibility of a U.S. attack, but it did not resolve the broader shipping and supply concerns affecting oil markets.

Why did Iran and the Strait of Hormuz matter to oil prices?

The concern was not limited to the possibility of a new U.S. strike. The Associated Press reported that attacks on tankers and sharply reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz had disrupted energy shipping. Before the war, about one-fifth of the world’s oil passed through the strait, according to AP.

AP also reported that an interim U.S.-Iran agreement signed in June collapsed within weeks amid renewed military action and disputes over control of the strait. Tanker traffic remained well below prewar levels. Reuters quoted Saul Kavonic, head of energy at MST Marquee, saying on Oct. 8 that “The frequency of Iranian attacks on ships is now at the highest point since the war began, and likely to intensify further.” That is Kavonic’s assessment, not a confirmed forecast of future attacks.

What other supply pressures were in play?

Hurricane Isaias and Gulf production

Hurricane Isaias was approaching U.S. Gulf of Mexico production. Reuters, citing the U.S. Marine Minerals Administration, reported that producers had shut in about 1.3 million barrels per day—62.9% of current Gulf oil production—as of Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. This is a dated snapshot of shut-in production, not a final count or evidence that the same volume would remain offline over time.

Oil-stock releases and shipping risk

Reuters also reported that the International Energy Agency had agreed to accelerate oil-stock releases that were already pledged and to prioritize diesel supplies. Alongside the tanker threats, these developments added to the supply concerns being assessed by the market; the reporting does not establish how much of the day’s price move each factor caused.

What does the news mean for household budgets and investors?

The Oct. 8 crude prices are a snapshot of wholesale benchmark markets, not a quote for gasoline, heating fuel or any household energy bill. The reports do not establish a specific retail-price change or a reliable direction for future oil or stock prices, so they are not a basis on their own for a budget forecast or investment decision.

The Atlantic reported that even advocates of limited strikes did not expect strikes alone to restore safe travel through Hormuz or lower gas prices before Election Day. That describes those advocates’ expectations, not a guaranteed outcome. For a personal-finance reader, the clearest takeaway is that oil faced several concurrent supply risks while the political outlook remained unsettled.
