The comments eased some immediate fears of a supply disruption, but reports did not establish a deal or a return to normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
How much did Brent and WTI fall?
Reuters reported that at 0220 GMT on October 9, Brent crude futures were down 72 cents, or 0.7%, at $103.53 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures were down 52 cents, or 0.6%, at $90.97 a barrel. These were intraday quotes, not closing prices.

Trump’s remarks reduced some concern that a US attack on Iran was imminent, which could have intensified threats to oil supply and shipping. Reuters described the decline as a market reaction to the comments; it does not establish that they were the sole cause of the move.

The diplomatic situation remained unresolved in the reports. Iran’s Tasnim news agency said Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was reviewing the US response to Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. That was a proposal under review, not an agreed reopening. Reuters also quoted XS.com analyst Linh Tran: “The prospect of easing tensions still needs to be reinforced by concrete progress in negotiations and improvements in shipping safety through the Strait of Hormuz.”
What supply risks were still supporting oil prices?
Shipping threats and the Strait of Hormuz
Threats to shipping in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz continued to raise supply concerns. Before the war, the strait carried about 20% of global oil and fuel shipments — Reuters, 2026. The reported comments did not mean that the route had reopened or that shipping risks had ended.

US sanctions on Iranian oil networks
On Thursday, the United States announced sanctions targeting individuals, networks and 17 vessels accused of transporting Iranian crude, oil products and petrochemicals, Reuters reported. These measures were another source of uncertainty around Iranian oil flows.

Hurricane-related production shut-ins
Hurricane Isaias constrained Gulf of Mexico output. As of Thursday, producers had shut in about 1.3 million barrels per day — US Marine Minerals Administration, 2026 — equal to 62.9% of current oil production — US Marine Minerals Administration, 2026 — according to the administration as cited by Reuters. Tran said the duration of the hurricane’s market impact would depend on inspections and the pace of operational recovery.

What was weighing against the supply concerns?
China planned to resume refined fuel exports after a brief holiday halt. Reuters reported that the planned resumption weighed on the market. This was a factor in refined products, not evidence of an increase in crude oil production.

No. The reported Friday declines were intraday moves, while the weekly picture differed by benchmark. Reuters said Brent was set for a weekly gain after settling 4% higher on Thursday in response to increased attacks on shipping carrying crude out of the Middle East. WTI, by contrast, was set for a slight weekly decline. A fall during one session therefore did not mean both benchmarks were down for the week.
