The reduction is 38.5 cents per gallon for gasoline and 47 cents for diesel, but those statutory amounts are not a guarantee that every station’s posted price will immediately fall by the same amount. Reports of different prices at nearby stations are anecdotal; the available sources do not measure a statewide post-start decline or show how much of any individual price change came from the suspension.
What changed on October 4
The Ohio Senate said the state’s three-month motor-fuel tax suspension took effect Sunday, October 4. The cited state tax rates are 38.5 cents per gallon for gasoline and 47 cents per gallon for diesel. For accounting purposes, the Senate announcement says the tax is reduced to 1/100th of a cent per gallon, or $0.0001 of a cent per gallon. Ohio Senate announcement
The suspension is temporary: it is scheduled to run for 90 days. The announcement describes the reduction in the state tax, not a required price for fuel or a promise about how retailers will change pump prices.
Why the tax reduction is not the same as a pump-price drop
The 38.5-cent gasoline and 47-cent diesel figures describe the state tax amounts. A posted pump price is a retail price, and the sources available do not show a matched set of station prices immediately before and after the start date. They therefore cannot establish that every station’s price fell by the full tax amount, or quantify how much of any change at a particular pump was caused by the suspension.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s #1 fuel additive for both gasoline and diesel engines
- A great tune-up in a bottle – treats gasoline, diesel fuel and increases MPG
- Cleans and lubricates the fuel system, including fuel injectors, carburetor and combustion chamber
- Improves fuel economy by burning excess exhaust emissions
- Increases power and acceleration by improving fuel flow and reducing deposit buildup
A price observed at one station on one day should not be treated as a statewide result. The October 4 Cleveland discussion on Reddit records consumers disagreeing about whether prices had fallen, when the change began, and what different stations charged. Those comments are individual reports, not a representative survey or station-price dataset. Cleveland Reddit discussion
What Ohio says will fund roads and bridges
The Senate estimated that the suspension would save motorists more than $725 million and said fiscal-year budget surpluses would cover highway and local-government construction projects that would otherwise draw on fuel-tax revenue. That is the state’s estimate and description of its funding plan, not an independently audited total of savings already realized. Ohio Senate announcement

- EFFICIENT FUEL BURN: A gas treatment that enhances gasoline stability, while reducing the build up of gum and varnish formation, leading to smoother operation and increased power output.
- EASY TO USE: Use one bottle of Redline Fuel System Cleaner per tank for most effective treatment, additive cleans nearly 100% efficiency in one treatment
- ENAHNCED ENGINE EFFCIENCY: Experience improved fuel economy and engine performance with Red Line 60103 SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner, as it effectively removes deposits, for enhanced exhaust system function
The Associated Press reported on September 30 that the governor’s office planned to sign legislation suspending the taxes through the remainder of 2026, and described $725 million from the general fund for roads and bridges normally funded by fuel taxes. Associated Press report
Price context before the suspension
On Wednesday, September 30, regular gasoline averaged $4.43 per gallon and diesel averaged $6.41 per gallon, according to AAA figures reported by the Associated Press. These are dated averages from before the suspension took effect, not evidence of what prices did afterward. Associated Press report

Axios’s chart, based on GasBuddy data, showed monthly average regular gasoline prices in Columbus ranging from $2.76 per gallon in December 2025 to $4.69 in May 2026. Its U.S. monthly averages ranged from $2.82 in January 2026 to $4.48 in May. Those historical monthly figures give broader price context but do not measure the October 4 change at Ohio stations. Axios also noted that the federal gas tax remains in place. Axios report

- FIXES ISSUES: This fuel treatment addresses common issues associated with rough-running engines in a single treatment. Designed to improve fuel economy, smooth out idling, & unclog fuel injectors, this will have your engine running great again!
- RESTORES PERFORMANCE: High-performance cleaner that utilizes P.E.A. technology to deeply clean & restore engine power, dissolve gum & varnish buildup, removes deposits from the combustion chamber, resulting in improved overall engine performance.
- EASY TO USE: With a simple application of 12 oz. for every 20 gallons of gasoline, this product is easy to use! Just pour it into your fuel tank during your next fill up or every 10,000 miles
- Tax rate versus retail price: the state tax amount is 38.5 cents per gallon for gasoline and 47 cents for diesel; a station’s posted price is a separate figure.
- Fuel type: gasoline and diesel have different state tax amounts, so do not apply the gasoline figure to diesel.
- Station and date versus average: a price at a named station on a particular date is not a statewide or national average.
- Timing versus cause: a price change around October 4 does not, by itself, identify how much the suspension contributed.
As of October 4, the cited sources establish the policy’s timing and tax amounts, along with earlier price context. They do not provide a station-level series or causal analysis that could verify the size or cause of uneven post-start changes.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Restore power and performance - Restores lost power and performance by removing gum, varnish, and other fuel system deposits.
- Maximize fuel economy - Keeps engines clean, and protects from deposits that rob engine efficiency and reduce fuel economy.
- Protect the fuel system and fuel gauge sensor from various types of corrosion - Multiple corrosion inhibitors protect metal components (both ferrous components like iron and steel, and non-ferrous components like copper and silver) from the damaging effects of corrosion.
- Vehicles with higher mileage accumulation can suffer from the effects of age - including carbon build-up and corrosion in the fuel system. Techron High Mileage Fuel System Cleaner helps keep your engine humming, no matter how many roads your vehicle has traveled.
- Techron High Mileage Fuel System Cleaner is fully compatible and protective in all commercially available ethanol blends (E10, E85, etc).
