During a test, the well flowed at 4,100 barrels of oil per day and 10.5 million standard cubic feet of gas per day under specified conditions. Those are test rates—not a reserve estimate or proof that the well can sustain that output.
What did OGDCL discover in Kohat?
OGDCL announced hydrocarbons in the Datta Formation at Baragzai X-01 (Slant), an exploratory well in the Nashpa Exploration License, Kohat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The company disclosed the result on January 1, 2026, in a filing to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (OGDCL’s January 1 filing).
OGDCL said the well was spudded on December 30, 2024, and drilled to a total depth of 5,170 metres. The Datta Formation interval was about 187 metres. The company said hydrocarbon shows, open-hole wireline-log petrophysical evaluation and image-log indications of fractures informed the decision to test the interval.
What were the reported Datta Formation test rates?
In cased-hole DST-02, OGDCL reported a flow of 4,100 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 10.5 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD). The test used a 32/64-inch choke and recorded a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,880 psig. These conditions are part of the result: the figures describe the test, not a forecast of continuous production.

A drill-stem test measures flow from a formation under test conditions. It can show that hydrocarbons flowed through the tested interval, but the reported rate alone does not establish recoverable reserves, a sustainable long-term rate, or how much oil or gas is being delivered to consumers.
How does the Datta result fit the well’s timeline?
Baragzai X-01 was evaluated across multiple formations. The later results are distinct tests and should not be combined with the January Datta figures.

The dated updates indicate a cumulative exploration story rather than one January test that established the well’s eventual output. OGDCL’s current company profile later described Baragzai X-01 as Pakistan’s highest-producing oil well, reporting 6,100 barrels per day of oil and 17 MMSCFD of gas. That is a later company-reported operational figure, not the January Datta test rate or an independently audited national ranking.
Who were the partners when OGDCL announced the discovery?
In its January 1, 2026 announcement, OGDCL reported a 65% working interest, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) a 30% working interest, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) a 5% carried interest. These are the interests reported at the time of that announcement; a later production notice gives changed interests, so they should not be treated as current ownership.

What does the discovery mean for Pakistan’s energy supply?
The discovery adds an indigenous oil and gas find to the country’s exploration record, but the January filing does not quantify recoverable reserves or establish a long-term production forecast. It also does not quantify any reduction in imports or the discovery’s eventual contribution to national supply.
OGDCL said the discovery “will contribute toward mitigating the energy supply-demand gap through indigenous resources” and add to the reserves base of the company, its joint venture partners and the country. That was the company’s stated expectation, not a measured forecast of supply impact.

Why “massive” needs context
“Massive” can describe the significance attached to the announcement, but the January disclosure’s concrete measures are test flow rates, well depth and formation thickness. It did not publish a quantified recoverable-reserves estimate. Without that estimate, the test rates should not be converted into a claim about the size of the recoverable resource.
