OGDCL reported a Kingriali Formation discovery at Baragzai X-01 in Kohat District, with oil and gas test rates that should not be confused with sustained production or single-well reserves.

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) reported a discovery at exploratory well Baragzai X-01 (Slant) in the Nashpa Block, Kohat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In a December 10, 2025 disclosure, the company said a test of the Kingriali Formation flowed at 2,280 barrels of oil per day and 5.6 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Those are test rates under stated conditions—not proof of sustained commercial production or a stand-alone estimate of recoverable reserves.

Where did OGDCL discover oil and gas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa?

The well is Baragzai X-01 (Slant), in the Nashpa Block in Kohat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. OGDCL described it as the first oil and gas discovery from the Kingriali Formation in the Nashpa Block. The company’s December 10, 2025 disclosure to the Pakistan Stock Exchange is the primary source for the discovery details.

OGDCL said drilling began on December 24, 2024, and reached a depth of 5,170 meters. The well encountered a 90-meter-thick interval of Triassic age in the Kingriali Formation. Based on hydrocarbon shows and interpretation of open-hole wireline logs, the company conducted a successful cased-hole drill-stem test.

How much oil and gas did the Baragzai well test produce?

OGDCL reported test rates of 2,280 barrels per day (BPD) of oil and 5.6 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas. The company stated that these rates were measured through a 32/64-inch choke at a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 2,400 psi. The choke and pressure describe the reported test conditions; they do not turn the rates into a forecast of routine output.

Are the reported flow rates commercial production?

No such conclusion follows from the disclosed test rates alone. A drill-stem test measures flow under specified test conditions. The December announcement does not establish that the well can sustain those rates over time, state that it has entered commercial production, or give a reserve estimate attributable solely to this Kingriali result.

OGDCL said the discovery would add to the hydrocarbon reserves base and help address Pakistan’s energy supply-demand gap using indigenous resources. That is the company’s stated assessment; the announcement does not quantify the well’s eventual contribution to national supply. The company secretary, Wasim Ahmad, wrote that the discovery “has further de-risked deeper exploration in the area” and would contribute to mitigating the supply-demand gap. This is OGDCL’s view, not an independently quantified impact.

Who are the partners in the Nashpa license?

OGDCL operates the Nashpa Exploration License and holds a 65% working interest. Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) holds a 30% working interest, while Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) has a 5% carried interest, according to the December disclosure.

How should later Baragzai figures be read?

Subsequent reports discuss additional formations and broader totals. They are useful context, but they are not results for the December 2025 Kingriali test by itself.

OGDCL half-year report

OGDCL’s half-year report for the six months ended December 31, 2025 lists Baragzai X-1 results in the Kingriali and Datta formations and discusses another Baragzai discovery. Its combined figures cover multiple discoveries, not a stand-alone reserve estimate for the Kingriali test.

OGDCL nine-month report

The nine-month report for the period ended March 31, 2026 lists eight discoveries across OGDCL’s portfolio. Its formations for Baragzai X-1 include Kingriali, Datta, Samana Suk and Shinawari, Hangu and Lumshiwal, and Lockhart. The report gives aggregate expected daily potential of 14,435 barrels of oil and 76 million cubic feet of gas, alongside aggregate 2P reserves of 51 million stock-tank barrels of oil and 337 billion cubic feet of gas (119 million barrels of oil equivalent combined). These are portfolio totals for eight discoveries, not figures for the single Kingriali announcement.

Government-reported Baragzai cumulative figures

A 2026 National Assembly of Pakistan document gives tested cumulative production potential of approximately 15,005 BPD of oil and 45.36 MMSCFD of gas for Baragzai X-01 multi-zone discoveries. These are multi-zone cumulative figures; they should not be attributed to the Kingriali test alone.
