What Office 2024 includes—and what changed
Office 2024 is a set of classic desktop applications. Office 2024 for Windows stays at its release feature set rather than receiving the ongoing feature updates associated with Microsoft 365. Which edition should you buy?
Choose Office Home 2024 for personal or school use
Home is the lower-priced option if you need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote on a single personal-use computer and do not need Outlook. Microsoft’s Store listing specifies non-commercial use, so it is not the appropriate edition when you need a license positioned for work.

Choose Office Home & Business 2024 if you need Outlook or work use
Home & Business adds Outlook and is described by Microsoft for use at home or work. Its higher US listed price is $70 above Home at the prices checked on October 8, 2026. Both editions are limited to one PC or Mac.

The financial distinction is not simply “buy once” versus “pay monthly.” Compare the license term, device needs, update model, included services, and intended use before deciding.

A one-time purchase can suit someone who wants a known app bundle on one computer and prefers not to maintain a software subscription. It does not lock in future major releases: Microsoft says a one-time Office purchase has no upgrade option to the next major release, so upgrading later means buying that release separately. Microsoft 365 is worth comparing if you need several devices, ongoing app updates, or its included services. To evaluate cost over time, compare the current subscription price and terms for the plan you would actually use with the one-time purchase price and the period you expect to keep the software; there is no universal break-even point without those inputs.

Office LTSC 2024 is a separate on-premises offering for commercial and government customers, with distinct licensing. Microsoft lists Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Access for Windows in the LTSC context; it also says Publisher is being retired in 2026.
