Ocean is developing a corrugated building panel made from engineered bamboo, but its performance claims and current availability need careful qualification. The Tacoma startup, formerly called Eco-Shelter, was reported to have raised more than $1.8 million from angel investors and received a further $1.8 million in National Science Foundation support as of November 2024. Those are historical figures, not a verified current funding total.
What is Ocean’s bamboo building material?
Ocean’s panel is a composite: bamboo is converted into strands, mixed with adhesive, formed into a mat and pressed into a corrugated shape or another design. Ocean’s undated product page describes the panel as more than 90% bamboo and lists a 4-by-8-foot format. The company identifies roofing in India, interior paneling and wall assemblies as applications. Ocean’s product page describes the material as stronger and stiffer than wood and more moisture-resistant than standard oriented strand board (OSB), but the page reviewed does not provide test methods for those comparisons.
GeekWire reported in November 2024 that Washington State University officials were filing a patent application for a product Ocean would license. Ocean calls the panel patent-pending on its product page. These descriptions reflect the reported and company-stated status; they do not establish a granted patent.
Who founded Ocean, and what funding was reported?
Ocean was founded by Alexa Bednarz in Tacoma, Washington, and was previously known as Eco-Shelter. GeekWire reported on November 4, 2024 that Bednarz developed the idea during seven years at the Gates Foundation, where she worked on polio vaccine programs, oversaw investments and managed global health projects.

That report said Ocean had raised more than $1.8 million from angel investors and received an additional $1.8 million from the National Science Foundation over the years. The figures are amounts reported by GeekWire at that time, not audited totals or confirmation of Ocean’s lifetime funding today. The report also said construction of a manufacturing facility was starting in India and that Bednarz expected sales in India and the United States in 2025. That was a forecast; it does not confirm that the facility opened or sales began.
What is established about durability and sustainability?
Ocean says the panel is more moisture-resistant than standard OSB and stronger and stiffer than wood, but the product page reviewed does not publish standardized comparative test results. GeekWire reported that the panels have a paint coating intended to keep them cooler, and quoted an expected service life of up to 25 years if properly maintained with paint or stains. That lifespan is a reported expectation, not an independently documented field result.

Ocean says its bamboo is sourced directly from farmers in India and claims its product produces more than 99% lower CO₂ emissions than competing products. The company page reviewed does not explain the comparison methodology or lifecycle-assessment boundaries, so the figure should be treated as Ocean’s claim rather than an independently verified result. Neither the available reporting nor the product page establishes a standardized performance comparison, independent lifecycle assessment or market-wide sustainability result.
Can you buy Ocean panels now?
The sources reviewed do not verify a current retailer, distributor, ordering process or present-day sales channel. Ocean’s product page describes the product and its uses, but that is not proof that panels are available to purchase. Likewise, GeekWire’s 2024 account of anticipated 2025 sales is not confirmation that commercial sales subsequently began.

For a building project, confirm availability directly with Ocean and request current specifications before comparing the panel with OSB, metal roofing, concrete or other materials. Useful decision points include application suitability, structural and moisture test data, installed cost, maintenance requirements, expected lifespan, local supply and independently documented environmental impacts. The available sources do not establish current prices or enough standardized data to make a reliable performance or cost ranking.

GeekWire reported that showcase visitors asked, “Where can I buy this?” and quoted Bednarz saying, “We’ve seen tremendous demand and opportunity for this product here in the U.S., and so much great support from our U.S. government and entities.” These are signs of interest as described by the founder and the report, not independent measures of customer demand or evidence of completed sales.

The funding figures indicate that investors and a federal grant program had supported the startup as reported in 2024. They do not, by themselves, establish that Ocean has reached commercial scale, that the panels are available locally or that the material will be cheaper over a building’s life than alternatives.
