Oath’s infrastructure chief said the planned completed facility would provide about 40 MW of total critical IT capacity; that was a projection, not confirmation of the final build-out. The expansion supported Verizon’s effort to scale its newly combined Yahoo and AOL media businesses.
How much capacity did Oath add in Quincy?
Data Center Knowledge reported on October 26, 2017, that phase one of Oath’s new Quincy facility added 25 MW. Mike Coleman, then Oath’s vice president of Infrastructure as a Service, said the facility was expected to reach about 40 MW of total critical IT capacity when complete. The 40 MW figure was a reported plan in 2017, not a verified completed or current capacity.
The expansion used a refined version of Yahoo’s Computing Coop data-center design. Oath was not a separate, independent data-center operator: Verizon formed the media business in 2017 by combining Yahoo’s operating business with its existing AOL business.
How did the Computing Coop cooling design work?
According to the 2017 Data Center Knowledge account, outside air entered through wall louvers, passed through server rows, rose into a cupola and exited through louvers in the cupola. Server fans moved air through the equipment, while a fan wall maintained slightly positive air pressure. The reported design avoided water-based cooling, including chilled-water and evaporative systems.

What changed in the Quincy design?
Coleman told Data Center Knowledge that modest changes to the cupola increased power density by 50 percent. The report said the cupola louvers rose from 9 feet to 13 feet, and their surface area increased from 2,520 square feet to 3,640 square feet. The larger louver area was intended to capture and exhaust more air.
Coleman also reported a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.08 for the facility. PUE compares the total energy used by a data center with the energy used by its IT equipment; a value closer to 1 indicates less overhead energy. The figure was attributed to an Oath executive in a 2017 trade-press report, not independently audited in the sources cited here.

What did the rack-density figures mean?
Data Center Knowledge reported that Coleman put the new facility’s capacity at up to 20 kilowatts (kW) per rack, compared with about 5 kW per rack for what the article called a traditional enterprise data center. That comparison is 2017 context, not a current universal benchmark. Rack power capacity depends on the facility and equipment, and the figures do not establish how every rack in Quincy was configured or used.
Why was the data-center investment part of Verizon’s media strategy?
Verizon announced the close of its Yahoo transaction on June 13, 2017, and described Oath as a portfolio of more than 50 media and technology brands, including HuffPost, Yahoo Sports, AOL.com, Tumblr, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Mail. Verizon said the portfolio reached more than a billion people. Those were Verizon’s launch descriptions, not independently assessed audience figures.

More content and a larger audience required infrastructure to store and deliver digital media. In the 2017 account, Oath’s stated ambition was to reach 2 billion consumers by 2020, compared with about 1 billion at the time of the acquisition. That was a company goal, not evidence that the target was met. Verizon’s 2018 SEC filing similarly described combining Yahoo’s operating business with Verizon’s existing Media business and said the company believed its technology, content and data could help expand digital-media scale. These statements describe the strategy, not its eventual success.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How did Oath’s wider infrastructure fit together?
The 2017 report described Yahoo and AOL infrastructure as a single operation supporting Oath. It listed former Yahoo data-center campuses in Quincy, Omaha, Lockport and Singapore; AOL’s Manassas Tech Center; colocation deployments supporting content delivery networks; and applications running in major public clouds. That account captures the reported 2017 footprint and should not be read as a current inventory.

What happened to Oath and the Quincy campus?
Oath was a historical brand. Verizon Media announced on December 18, 2018, that it would replace the Oath name beginning January 8, 2019. The announcement page now identifies Verizon Media as Yahoo. Accordingly, Oath is the appropriate name for the 2017 Quincy expansion; it is not evidence of the present corporate structure.
The available account establishes what Oath reported about the facility and its planned capacity in 2017, but it does not establish the Quincy campus’s current capacity, ownership arrangements or operating status.
