On June 4, 2020, AWS and Slack announced a multi-year partnership under which AWS planned to use Slack for internal team communication, while Slack said it would keep AWS as its preferred cloud provider. The announcement also said Amazon Chime SDK would power audio, video, and screen sharing in native Slack Calls.
What did AWS and Slack agree to?
The companies described a two-way service arrangement, not an acquisition. AWS planned to use Slack to simplify how its teams communicate. Slack, in turn, said it would continue relying on AWS as its preferred cloud provider. Their announcement framed the relationship as a way to support enterprise collaboration and connect AWS services with Slack. Amazon’s June 4, 2020 announcement and Slack’s announcement describe the agreement.
How was Amazon Chime related to Slack Calls?
The announcement said Amazon Chime SDK would provide the underlying audio, video, and screen-sharing technology for native Slack Calls. Slack characterized the change as a migration to Amazon Chime’s voice and video infrastructure. That describes Chime as technology behind calls made within Slack, not as a requirement that users leave Slack and open a separate Chime meeting for every call. The release announced the plan in 2020; it does not establish the present-day implementation or availability of those capabilities.
What other AWS integrations were announced?
The 2020 announcement also named work involving several AWS services and Slack:

- AWS Chatbot: support for using AWS Chatbot in Slack.
- Amazon AppFlow: an integration intended to transfer data between Slack and AWS services.
- AWS Key Management Service: support for Slack Enterprise Key Management.
These were presented as parts of broader integration work. The announcement does not, by itself, confirm that each planned capability remains available in the same form today.
How this differed from the earlier Chime Meetings App
AWS had announced an Amazon Chime Meetings App for Slack on December 5, 2019. That app let users start or join one-to-one or group Amazon Chime meetings from Slack channels and conversations. It was a way to launch or join Chime meetings from Slack, distinct from the 2020 announcement that Chime technology would power calls inside native Slack Calls. AWS’s 2019 announcement describes the earlier app.

Why the distinction matters
“Amazon,” “AWS,” and “Amazon Chime” refer to different parts of the arrangement: AWS was the business adopting Slack internally and providing Slack’s preferred cloud infrastructure; Amazon Chime SDK was the communications technology named for native Slack Calls. The agreement joined services and integration plans, rather than transferring ownership of Slack.
