Contemporaneous reports said the company intended to offer 3.5 million shares at $7 to $9 each; those reports describe proposed terms, not confirmation of the final price or the offering’s completion.
What the 1999 reports said
EE Times reported on January 19, 1999, that Nvidia’s IPO was planned for Friday, January 22. EDN published a corroborating report on January 20. Both attributed the schedule to sources close to the company.
The reports described an intended offering of 3.5 million shares, priced at $7 to $9 per share. EE Times estimated Nvidia’s market capitalization at $228.5 million. These were the proposed terms and estimate reported at the time, not verified final transaction figures.
What Nvidia made at the time
Nvidia was then a graphics-chip maker. Its products included the RIVA 128 and RIVA TNT families for consumer PCs, as well as a separate line for corporate machines. The reports’ IPO announcement therefore concerned a semiconductor company focused on graphics hardware, not the company’s later business or products.

What the reports said the proceeds might fund
EDN reported that Nvidia would likely use proceeds to pay debt and finance future development. That was an expected use described in the 1999 coverage; the reports cited here do not establish how the money was ultimately used.
What the announcement does—and does not—confirm
The coverage establishes that an IPO was reported as planned for January 22, 1999, and records its proposed share count and price range. It does not, by itself, establish the final offering price, whether the offering closed as scheduled, where the shares listed, subsequent trading performance, or the actual use of proceeds. Neither report cited here supplies a named speaker or official-document quotation confirming those outcomes.
