The U.S. Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratory, NVIDIA and Oracle announced plans on October 28, 2025, for two AI supercomputers at Argonne: Solstice, planned with 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, and Equinox, planned with 10,000. DOE also said Oracle would immediately provide researchers with access to AI computing resources, separate from the later systems. The announced specifications and schedules are plans—not confirmation that either supercomputer has been delivered or opened to researchers.
What the partnership announced
The partnership combines federal laboratory infrastructure with computing resources and investment from industry. DOE’s announcement distinguishes Oracle’s immediate provision of AI computing resources, using NVIDIA Hopper and Blackwell architectures, from the two supercomputers planned for Argonne. The immediate resources should not be confused with access to Solstice or Equinox, which were still future systems in the announcement. DOE’s announcement
How Solstice and Equinox compare
| System | Announced configuration | Announced timing | Purpose and location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solstice | 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, according to DOE’s October 28, 2025 announcement. | No delivery date was given in that DOE announcement. A DOE Office of Science planning timeline dated March 2026 depicts operations across approximately 2027–2032; it does not confirm delivery or operation. | Planned for Argonne to support scientific AI research. |
| Equinox | 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, according to DOE’s October 28, 2025 announcement. | DOE expected delivery during 2026; NVIDIA specified expected availability in the first half of 2026. A DOE Office of Science timeline dated March 2026 depicts operations across approximately 2026–2031. These are forecasts and planning references, not proof of operation. | Planned for Argonne to support scientific AI research. |
The figures and initial schedules come from the DOE announcement and NVIDIA’s announcement. The later timeline is in the DOE Office of Science’s March 2026 planning document. The sources reviewed do not confirm construction milestones, completed delivery, or researcher access as of October 4, 2026.
What the 2,200-exaflops claim means
NVIDIA said the interconnected systems would provide a combined 2,200 exaflops of AI performance. That is NVIDIA’s announced figure for the planned pair, not a measured result from operating supercomputers. The cited release does not give enough benchmark methodology to treat it as a universal, directly comparable measure of performance. NVIDIA’s release

What researchers are expected to do with the systems
DOE and NVIDIA describe the systems as infrastructure for developing and training frontier and reasoning models for open science. The announcements name NVIDIA Megatron-Core for model training and NVIDIA TensorRT for inference, with the aim of supporting agentic AI workflows for scientific discovery. DOE also says the systems will connect with scientific instruments and data assets, including Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source. These are stated aims, not reported research outcomes. The announcements discuss capabilities for DOE researchers and scientists at Argonne and elsewhere, and Argonne said it was preparing thousands of researchers. They do not provide a public sign-up process, eligibility rules, an allocation procedure, or a confirmed service status. The available information therefore does not establish that members of the public can apply for or directly use either system. DOE; Argonne Leadership Computing Facility
