He called the models “excellent,” said American companies should be allowed to use them, and argued that cheaper AI could expand demand for chips, data centers and other computing infrastructure.
Huang was not saying China has overtaken the United States across the entire AI industry. His argument is narrower—and closely connected to NVIDIA’s business: more capable, affordable models could encourage more companies to use AI, creating more demand for the hardware and software needed to run it.

What Jensen Huang said
The immediate context was Kimi K3, an open-weight model from Beijing-based Moonshot AI. Axios reported that its combination of strong performance, lower pricing and downloadable weights had revived investor concerns that more efficient AI models could weaken the case for enormous infrastructure spending.

#1 Best Overall
- Chinese AI models are “excellent.”
- Excellent open models should be used.
- American companies should be “absolutely” allowed to use Chinese models.
- Chinese models will not automatically drive U.S. AI companies out of business.
- Free or cheaper AI could be positive for hardware, chips and data centers.
- Downloading a model does not automatically create a backdoor to the Chinese government.
- Open models can potentially improve security because researchers can inspect them, identify weaknesses and build defenses.
Those are Huang’s positions, not established conclusions about every Chinese model or about U.S. policy.
Why Kimi K3 reignited the debate
Investors have repeatedly worried that more efficient models could reduce demand for NVIDIA’s GPUs. The concern became especially prominent after DeepSeek’s January 2025 breakthrough, which was widely seen as evidence that highly capable AI could be developed or operated at lower apparent cost.
The bearish theory is straightforward: if companies can obtain strong models cheaply, they may need fewer expensive training systems or may shift workloads from large cloud clusters to smaller local models.

More businesses, software developers, industrial companies and robotics firms may deploy AI, increasing the total number of inference requests. In that scenario, the cost of each task falls, but the number of tasks rises enough to expand overall demand for computing.
That is a strategic thesis, not a guarantee. Whether efficiency increases or reduces NVIDIA’s sales depends on application growth, hardware utilization, model architecture, demand elasticity and competition from alternative chips.

Why the position makes commercial sense for NVIDIA
NVIDIA benefits from AI computation broadly rather than only from one company’s proprietary model. Its business spans accelerated-computing chips, networking, data-center systems, software and cloud infrastructure.
That makes an expanding open-model ecosystem potentially valuable to NVIDIA in several ways:
- More inference: Cheaper models may encourage companies to run AI continuously and at larger scale.
- More developers: Downloadable models can support experimentation and specialized applications.
- More infrastructure: Training, fine-tuning and serving models still require compute, storage and networking.
- Platform adoption: If developers build around NVIDIA software and hardware, the company can benefit even when model providers compete with one another.
- Local and edge AI: Smaller models can run on workstations, consumer GPUs, vehicles, robots and other devices.
NVIDIA’s own financial communications reflect this strategy. In its Q1 fiscal 2027 results, the company said its platform runs “every frontier and open source model” and highlighted open-source inference software, open AI models and optimization for models including Qwen on NVIDIA RTX and edge devices.
NVIDIA also reported quarterly revenue of $81.6 billion for the quarter ended April 26, 2026, up 85% year over year. Data-center revenue was $75.2 billion, up 92%. Its Q2 fiscal 2027 revenue outlook was $91.0 billion, plus or minus 2%, while the company said that outlook assumed no data-center compute revenue from China.
These figures show why model adoption matters to NVIDIA, but they do not prove that every open model will increase its revenue.
Is Huang saying China is winning the AI race?
No—not in the broad sense. Praising Chinese models is different from claiming that China leads the United States in AI overall.
AI leadership has several separate dimensions:
| Dimension | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Model capability | Performance on specific reasoning, coding, language or multimodal tasks. |
| Open-model availability | Whether developers can download, modify and deploy model artifacts. |
| Advanced chips | Access to the processors and memory needed for training and inference. |
| Data centers | Available power, networking, storage and large-scale computing capacity. |
| Research and talent | The ability to develop new architectures, algorithms and applications. |
| Software ecosystems | Tools, libraries, cloud platforms and developer adoption. |
| Commercial deployment | How effectively models are integrated into products and business processes. |
| Government policy | Export controls, subsidies, procurement rules and national-security restrictions. |
A Chinese model can be competitive—or even excellent—in a particular benchmark or use case without demonstrating that China leads on every part of the AI stack. Huang also rejected the idea that the United States would simply be displaced, emphasizing that both countries will continue using AI.
“Open-source” versus “open-weight” AI
These terms are often used interchangeably in headlines, but they are not identical.
- Open-source software generally makes source code available under a license that permits specified inspection, modification and redistribution.
- Open-weight AI usually means that a model’s trained parameters can be downloaded or accessed. The training data, complete training code, data-cleaning process or commercial rights may still be restricted.
- Hosted AI is accessed through an API or service. Users may not receive the model weights and must generally rely on the provider’s infrastructure and terms.
Licenses vary substantially. Some permit commercial use; others limit redistribution, scale, geography or downstream applications. Unless all relevant components and rights are available, “open model” or “open-weight model” is the more precise description.
How strong is Huang’s security argument?
Huang’s security case is that organizations can run a downloaded model in a controlled environment, restrict its network access and inspect its behavior. A diverse ecosystem may also reduce dependence on a single provider or model.
That can reduce some risks, especially when sensitive prompts remain inside an organization’s infrastructure. But local deployment is not a complete security solution. Businesses must also consider:
- Malicious or compromised model packages and software dependencies.
- Unverified update channels and serving infrastructure.
- Opaque training data and development processes.
- Censorship, political bias or unexpected refusal behavior.
- Prompt leakage, data retention and access-control failures.
- Model misuse and unsafe outputs.
- License, intellectual-property and procurement restrictions.
A downloaded model is not automatically unsafe, and it is not automatically safe. Security depends on the model artifact, surrounding software, network controls, evaluation process and the organization’s governance.

Huang’s comments sit uneasily alongside U.S. efforts to limit China’s access to advanced AI chips and related technologies. NVIDIA’s Q1 fiscal 2027 outlook explicitly assumed no data-center compute revenue from China, illustrating that model availability and hardware access are separate issues.
Huang’s policy argument is that banning Chinese models from U.S. companies could reduce choice, slow innovation and encourage fragmented technology ecosystems. Critics can reasonably argue that access to foreign models may create data, intellectual-property or strategic risks, particularly when models are used in sensitive industries.

NVIDIA has a direct interest in maximizing global AI-compute demand and has historically had an interest in the Chinese market. Huang’s view may be sincerely grounded in his assessment of AI adoption, but it also aligns with NVIDIA’s business incentives.
Best Value
Whether a particular model or NVIDIA product can legally be used or sold depends on the model’s terms, the customer, the data involved, export-control rules, sanctions and the relevant jurisdiction at the time. Huang’s comments do not change those requirements.
NVIDIA’s broader “open” strategy
NVIDIA has promoted open models and software beyond language models. Its CES 2026 materials listed the Alpamayo family of open-source AI models and tools for autonomous-vehicle development.
The company’s open strategy is likely a combination of ideology, defense and commercial positioning:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open ecosystems can broaden AI adoption.
- Open tools can make NVIDIA hardware easier to use.
- Supporting competing model developers helps NVIDIA remain a common platform.
- Open models can extend AI from large data centers to local devices and physical systems.
In other words, NVIDIA does not need to own every model to benefit from a growing AI market. It needs its compute platform to remain useful across many models.
What businesses should check before adopting a Chinese open model
- Review the license. Confirm commercial-use, modification, redistribution and geographic restrictions.
- Identify what is actually open. Determine whether the release includes weights only, or also code and meaningful training-data documentation.
- Choose the deployment method. Local or private deployment may offer more data control than a hosted API, but it creates additional operational responsibilities.
- Scan the software supply chain. Verify downloads, inspect dependencies, scan packages and control update channels.
- Test real workloads. Benchmark the model on the organization’s tasks rather than relying on headline scores.
- Evaluate behavior. Test for security weaknesses, sensitive-topic behavior, bias, hallucinations and unacceptable refusals.
- Calculate total cost. Include GPUs, cloud time, storage, networking, engineering, monitoring, support, electricity and security review—not only token prices.
- Check legal and policy constraints. Review privacy, data residency, sanctions, export controls and procurement requirements as of the deployment date.
- Maintain a fallback. Keep another model or provider available if the license, service or geopolitical environment changes.
The investor takeaway
Huang’s comments do not amount to an admission that China has surpassed the United States, nor do they eliminate the risks facing NVIDIA. They express a bullish view that cheaper and more widely available AI will expand the total market for computation.
The opposing possibility is that efficiency reduces the amount of compute required for each task, shifts workloads toward smaller local systems and strengthens competing hardware ecosystems. The outcome depends on whether new AI use grows faster than compute demand falls per use case.
For NVIDIA, open Chinese models are therefore both a competitive-policy issue and a potential source of additional workload. For businesses, the correct response is neither automatic adoption nor blanket rejection: evaluate the specific model, license, deployment architecture, security posture and legal environment.
