Norwich City’s Wage Bill: 2018/19 vs the Latest Accounts and 2025/26 Estimates

Norwich City’s latest filed club-wide wages are nominally lower than in 2018/19, while third-party squad estimates suggest higher player salaries. The figures measure different things.

Norwich City reported £43.658 million in wages and salaries for the financial year ended 30 June 2019, when Daniel Farke’s first promotion-winning squad was at the club. The latest filed accounts located, for the year ended 30 June 2025, report £39.899 million. That is about 8.6% lower in nominal terms—but both figures cover club-wide wages, not just the first team. Third-party player-salary estimates suggest a different trend, but they are not a verified like-for-like comparison.

What is the fairest comparison?

For a comparison based on club accounts, use the wages-and-salaries lines for the years ended 30 June 2019 and 30 June 2025. Norwich City Football Club PLC reported £43.658 million in 2019; a transcription of its 2025 accounts reports £39.899 million. The difference is £3.759 million, or about 8.6% lower in 2025, without adjusting for inflation.

These are accounting-year figures, not squad-only payroll totals. They include a wider range of employees and costs than first-team player wages, so the comparison answers what the club reported in wages, not what it spent solely on Farke’s players.

Period and source Reported or estimated amount Scope and qualification
Year ended 30 June 2019 — Norwich City Football Club PLC annual report £43.658m wages and salaries Club-wide accounting line; promotion bonuses included.
Year ended 30 June 2025 — figures transcribed by The Accounts £39.899m wages Club-wide accounting line; not a first-team-only figure.
2018/19 — SalarySport estimate £318,890 per week; £16,582,280 annualized Third-party estimate for the squad data it lists; not a club disclosure.
2025/26 — SalaryLeaks estimate £23.9m including bonuses Third-party estimate for the first team; not audited or established as methodologically comparable with SalarySport.

What Norwich’s 2019 accounts include

The club’s 2019 report recorded £54.441 million in total staff costs, including £43.658 million in wages and salaries and £5.806 million in other employment costs, including loan players. It also said £6.7 million of player salaries had been charged against provisions brought forward and was therefore excluded from the stated staff-cost line. The report explicitly notes: “Promotion bonuses are included in wages and salaries above.” (Norwich City Football Club PLC annual report 2019)

The report’s employee base was broader than the playing squad: average monthly headcount was 292, including football staff, academy and football support staff, directors and other employees. Those details make it especially important not to label the £43.658 million line as Farke’s first-team wage bill.

What the latest filed accounts show

The latest complete accounts located are for the year ended 30 June 2025; Companies House records that the group accounts were filed on 11 December 2025. (Companies House filing history) The 2025 wages figure of £39.899 million is a transcription of the filed accounts by The Accounts, rather than a first-team salary disclosure. (The Accounts)

Norwich’s official 2024/25 announcement reported turnover of £39.3 million and an operating loss of £25.5 million before player trading. It also said 2024/25 was the first season since 2018/19 in which the club received neither full Premier League nor parachute-payment income. (Norwich City’s 2024/25 financial results) The same secondary transcription lists wages of £44.856 million in 2024 and £47.976 million in 2023; average employee counts were 409 and 370 respectively, compared with 408 in 2025.

Why player-salary estimates point to a different result

SalarySport estimates Norwich’s 2018/19 squad wages at £318,890 per week, or £16,582,280 annualized, and says its data includes wages for all 66 players in its squad listing. It identifies Jordan Rhodes as the highest earner at an estimated £35,000 a week and says the five highest earners made up 37% of its estimated squad total. These are SalarySport estimates, not amounts disclosed by Norwich. (SalarySport’s Norwich City 2018/19 wage estimates)

SalaryLeaks puts Norwich’s 2025/26 first-team salaries at an estimated £23.9 million including bonuses, naming Shane Duffy at an estimated £35,000 a week. The site says comprehensive Championship salary data is rarely published and describes its figures as informed estimates. (SalaryLeaks’ Norwich City 2025/26 estimates)

The apparent increase from £16.58 million to £23.9 million is suggestive, not a measured like-for-like rise. The sites have not established that they use the same roster definitions or assumptions about bonuses, loans and contracts, and neither figure is an audited club disclosure.

How to read “current” in this comparison

The £39.899 million figure is the latest filed club-wide wages amount identified, for 2024/25. The £23.9 million figure is an estimate for the 2025/26 football season, not a filed accounts total. The exact 2026/27 first-team payroll is not verified in the available sources. Keep the period and scope attached to any figure rather than calling an older estimate the current wage bill.

No consistent inflation-adjusted series for first-team wages is established here. The 8.6% difference between the filed 2019 and 2025 figures is a nominal comparison; it does not show how the purchasing power of wages changed or prove that player-only payroll fell by the same proportion.
