Compare North American Construction Group (NACG) with contract miners and heavy-civil contractors—not equipment manufacturers—and focus on contract quality, margins, fleet economics, cash conversion and balance-sheet risk. NACG’s mix spans Canada and Australia, and its recent acquisition of IMC affects year-over-year comparisons. Its latest reported quarter showed revenue growth alongside a lower adjusted EBITDA margin, illustrating why scale and sales growth alone do not settle the investment comparison.
What kind of company is NACG?
NACG is a contractor and equipment-services operator, not simply a maker or seller of mining machinery. Its subsidiaries and joint ventures undertake contract mining and earthworks, mine-site heavy civil construction, maintained equipment rental, mine management, field maintenance, component remanufacturing and equipment rebuilds.

In Canadian oil sands, its work can include handling muskeg, topsoil and overburden; building mine infrastructure and haul roads; supporting tailings work; hauling ore; and reclamation and stream-diversion projects. This mix matters: a contractor’s economics depend on operating services, customer contracts and fleet deployment, which are not directly comparable with an equipment manufacturer’s product sales, aftermarket business and manufacturing cycle.

MNALP is an oil-sands contractor that subcontracts work to NACG; Nuna operates in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories and has additional project work elsewhere in Canada. NACG participates in the Fargo-Moorhead flood-diversion project through joint ventures, adding project exposure that investors should distinguish from recurring mine-services activity. How much of NACG’s business comes from each market?
The company’s reported 2025 segment mix was heavily weighted to its Australian and Canadian heavy-equipment operations. These percentages exclude NACG’s share of joint-venture revenue and are rounded, so they total 101% rather than 100%.
| Reported segment | Share of 2025 revenue | Comparison note |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy Equipment–Australia | 54% | Includes MacKellar; the later Q2 2026 period also includes acquired IMC. (Company AIF, March 11, 2026; Q2 2026 filing, August 12, 2026.) |
| Heavy Equipment–Canada | 45% | Excludes NACG’s share of joint-venture revenue. (Company AIF, March 11, 2026.) |
| Other | 2% | Excludes NACG’s share of joint-venture revenue. (Company AIF, March 11, 2026.) |
For peer analysis, align country, mine type, commodity and customer exposure, and decide how to treat joint ventures. Revenue may be consolidated differently from one company to another. NACG’s post-acquisition results also have a different business scope from its earlier periods, so reported growth should not automatically be read as like-for-like growth.
What do backlog and contract terms tell investors?
NACG’s AIF reported contractual backlog of C$4.0 billion after an Australian contract was amended and extended in 2025. Backlog can help indicate future work, but it is not cash on hand, guaranteed profit or a promise that all scheduled work will be completed on its original terms.

- What are contract duration, renewal rights, termination provisions and price-adjustment terms?
- How concentrated is the backlog by customer, mine, region and contract start date?
- What mobilization, working capital and fleet investment are needed before the work produces cash?
- How much work faces competitive rebidding or changing contractor arrangements?
NACG says customers sometimes consolidate contractors, enter longer-term committed-volume agreements and add bidders to press prices. For that reason, a long contract or large backlog should be assessed alongside margin, customer leverage and the capital required to deliver it.
What do NACG’s latest results show—and what do they not show?
NACG’s unaudited Q2 2026 filing, for the quarter ended June 30 and filed August 12, 2026, reported combined revenue of C$456.1 million, up 23% year over year, and adjusted EBITDA of C$93.5 million. Combined adjusted EBITDA margin was 20.5%, down from 21.6% in Q2 2025.
Management attributed part of the margin pressure to IMC’s lower-margin contribution. IMC contributed C$90.6 million of combined revenue and C$13.1 million of adjusted EBITDA in Q2 2026. Management said the legacy business’s adjusted EBITDA margin, excluding IMC, was consistent with Q2 2025. That distinction helps explain the reported blend; it does not by itself establish that future margins will rise.
NACG’s consolidated figures and its “combined” figures differ because joint-venture revenue is equity-accounted rather than consolidated in the same way as subsidiary revenue. When comparing NACG’s reported numbers with a peer, make sure both figures use the same basis and period before drawing conclusions.

How should investors compare NACG with other contractors?
Use a like-for-like framework. A candidate peer should have meaningful contract-mining, mine-site earthworks or related heavy-civil activity; an equipment manufacturer is not a direct peer merely because it supplies mining fleets. The reviewed filings do not establish a standardized peer set or a comparable peer financial table, so named comparisons require checking each candidate’s filings for business mix, geography, scale and accounting treatment.
| Comparison axis | What to examine | Why it matters for NACG |
|---|---|---|
| Business and geography | Contract mining versus heavy civil or rental; country, mine type, customer and commodity exposure; joint-venture contribution. | NACG has substantial Australian and Canadian operations, joint ventures and project work, each with different operating and reporting characteristics. |
| Revenue visibility and contract quality | Backlog definition, committed volumes, contract duration, termination and renewal terms, customer concentration and rebidding exposure. | A large backlog is not equivalent to assured cash generation or margin. |
| Profitability and mix | Reported operating income and net income alongside adjusted EBITDA and margin; segment contribution; acquisition effects; treatment of joint ventures. | Q2 2026 combined revenue grew while combined adjusted EBITDA margin fell, with management identifying IMC’s lower margin as one factor. |
| Fleet economics | Owned, leased and rented units; age and capacity; utilization and availability; maintenance and rebuild capability; sustaining versus growth capital; subcontracting. | Fleet scale can support delivery capacity but also brings financing, maintenance and replacement needs. |
| Cash conversion and financial risk | Cash flow after sustaining capital expenditure, working-capital changes, cash interest, debt maturities, leverage definitions and covenant headroom. | Adjusted EBITDA does not show the cash needed for capital expenditures, working capital or debt service. |
| Execution and seasonality | Safety, labour availability, weather and operating conditions, project timing, mobilization costs and regional seasonality. | NACG’s AIF says Nuna activity generally peaks from June to September; project and seasonal timing can affect period-to-period comparisons. |
How large is NACG’s fleet, and what should investors ask about it?
NACG reported 1,155 owned and leased heavy-equipment units across relevant segments and joint ventures at December 31, 2025; rented equipment was excluded. Its AIF says many of its mining trucks exceed 240 tons in capacity. Neither fleet count nor truck capacity establishes superior returns on its own.
Compare fleet figures on a consistent basis: owned, leased and rented equipment should not be blended without disclosure, and joint-venture units should be treated consistently across companies. Then examine age, utilization, availability, maintenance, rebuild capability, replacement spending and the share of work performed with subcontracted equipment. A large fleet may support capacity and long-term contracts, but its investment case depends on productive use and cash returns after upkeep and financing.
How should investors treat NACG’s 2026 outlook and adjusted measures?
In its August 12, 2026 filing, management raised its 2026 combined-revenue outlook to C$1.6–1.8 billion, with a C$1.7 billion midpoint. It forecast adjusted EBITDA of C$380–420 million and free cash flow of C$110–130 million. These are forward-looking company estimates, not results already earned.

NACG defines adjusted EBITDA and other non-GAAP or supplemental measures and cautions that they have analytical limits. Adjusted EBITDA does not capture capital expenditures, working-capital needs or the cash needed to service debt. Assess it with reported US GAAP operating income, net income, cash flows, capital expenditures, working capital and debt service; reconcile peer adjustments rather than assuming similarly named metrics are identical.
Management’s August 2026 letter described the challenge this way: “The inflection point is not simply greater scale, but our ability to translate that scale into improved performance and durable value.” This is CEO Barry Palmer’s view, not independent evidence of future performance.
A practical comparison checklist
- Choose relevant businesses. Start with contractors that earn meaningful revenue from contract mining, mine-site earthworks or related heavy civil services, not manufacturers chosen solely for their exposure to mining.
- Align the basis. Match reporting periods, currencies, consolidated versus combined or equity-accounted revenue, and treatment of joint ventures and acquisitions.
- Test contract quality. Read beyond backlog totals to committed work, duration, termination terms, customer concentration, rebidding risk and delivery investment.
- Trace margin to cash. Compare segment and reported profitability, then account for working capital, sustaining capital, interest and debt needs.
- Assess fleet returns. Separate owned, leased and rented units; compare utilization, maintenance, replacement needs and returns on the capital committed.
- Stress execution assumptions. Consider labour, weather, seasonality, mobilization and project timing before treating a strong quarter or guidance range as a durable run rate.
These checks help distinguish growth that expands a contractor’s work from growth that improves durable cash generation. For NACG, the most informative comparisons are those that make acquisition effects, business mix, margin, capital requirements and joint-venture accounting visible rather than obscuring them in a single revenue or backlog number.
