Nithin Kamath said in a statement reposted by Zerodha on LinkedIn in 2026 that the company’s youngest customer was 28 days old when the parents opened a minor account; they made the first investment a week later. The post did not disclose what they invested or how much. The anecdote is a company-reported milestone, not an independently audited statistic. For parents considering a similar account, the key point is that a minor can own eligible investments, but a guardian—not the child—operates the account, and the account does not provide the usual freedom to trade.
What Kamath said about Zerodha’s youngest customer
Kamath’s statement, reposted by Zerodha, said: “Our youngest customer is just 28 days old. The parents opened a Zerodha minor account, and a week later, they made the first investment.” The amount and investment type were not specified. The report does not establish how common newborn investing is or imply that parents need to invest for a child at birth. Zerodha’s repost of Kamath’s statement.

What a minor demat account does—and who controls it
A demat account holds securities electronically; a trading account is used to buy or sell securities on exchanges. A minor may hold a demat account, but SEBI says the guardian operates it until the minor becomes an adult. The account is therefore a way to hold investments in the child’s name, not a standard brokerage account the child can independently use. SEBI’s FAQ explains the account framework and who may act as guardian. SEBI FAQ on demat accounts.
What can be invested in a child’s name
Securities transferred into the account
SEBI says a minor cannot contract with a broker to purchase or sell securities. A trading account in the minor’s name is limited to selling securities the minor already holds, through specified routes. Zerodha says shares and government securities may be transferred into a minor’s account; its guidance also says minors cannot directly buy shares or government securities, use intraday or futures-and-options orders, or participate in an offer for sale (OFS). Mutual funds
Mutual-fund units can be held in a minor’s name through a guardian under SEBI’s rules. Zerodha says its Coin workflow supports mutual-fund investments and SIPs for minor accounts, with payments required to come from the child’s bank account. Product workflows and payment requirements can change, so verify them with the provider before investing. - Set up the guardian’s account. Zerodha’s online process requires the guardian to have an account with the company.
- Prepare the child’s and guardian’s details. The listed requirements include the child’s PAN, date-of-birth proof, bank proof and guardian details. The online process also involves verification using the child’s Aadhaar.
- Submit the application and documents. Follow the current portal instructions and resolve any verification or document issues it flags before the account is used.
- Check costs and payment rules. Zerodha’s page currently lists zero account-opening and annual maintenance fees, but brokerage, statutory charges and taxes may apply when trades are executed. Mutual-fund payments must come from the child’s bank account. Confirm the latest charges and rules directly with Zerodha before proceeding.
Plan for the child turning 18
A minor account does not simply become an unrestricted adult account automatically. Zerodha says the account needs to be converted when the child turns 18, with fresh KYC. Plan for the transition so the new adult account holder can complete the required verification and manage the investments. The exact conversion steps should be checked with the provider at the time. Tax and family considerations
Zerodha says income from a minor’s investments is generally clubbed with the income of the higher-earning parent. That summary does not determine the result for a particular family, and the sources cited here do not establish every exception or reporting requirement. Ask a qualified tax professional how the rules apply to your circumstances before filing or making a tax decision. Zerodha’s explanation of tax on a minor account.

Before opening an account, consider who will provide and document the money, which investments suit the family’s goals and risk tolerance, and who will manage the account and paperwork as the child grows. Investing early is a choice, not a requirement, and neither the account nor a particular investment guarantees a future outcome.
