The phrase “12 or 14 months to survive” came from an unnamed senior Nissan official quoted in a November 2024 report about the automaker’s financial pressure and search for a stable investor. It was a reported warning—not a formal bankruptcy deadline, an announcement that Nissan would close, or proof that the company is currently going out of business.
What “living on borrowed time” referred to
The headline refers to a late-November 2024 Financial Times report, with its key details relayed by Carscoops. The report described Nissan seeking a long-term, steady shareholder as Renault reduced its stake in the company.
The official close to Nissan was not named in the available coverage. The reported quote was: “We have 12 or 14 months to survive.” The same official was also quoted as saying: “This is going to be tough. And in the end, we need Japan and the US to be generating cash.” Those remarks convey urgency, but they are not a company-issued forecast or a published countdown to insolvency.
What investor options were discussed
Secondary coverage said banks and insurance groups were among the possible categories of long-term investor being considered. It also reported that Nissan had not ruled out Honda acquiring shares, while describing a Honda tie-up as one possibility rather than a completed arrangement.

The available reporting does not establish that Honda—or another investor—became the specific stable shareholder Nissan was seeking. Do not read discussion of a potential transaction as evidence that it happened.
What Nissan said it planned to cut in 2024
Contemporaneous 2024 coverage reported two announced turnaround measures: 9,000 planned job cuts and a 20 percent reduction in global production capacity. Carscoops’ report presents these as plans. The available sources do not verify how much of either measure was ultimately implemented or on what schedule, so they should not be described as completed cuts.

The 2024 quote alone cannot answer Nissan’s current financial condition: the quoted period has passed, but a warning attributed to an unnamed source does not establish what happened afterward. A 2026 secondary explainer likewise characterizes the phrase as not being an official bankruptcy deadline: Carscoops’ 2026 account.

A later, limited product update reported on July 15, 2026 that Nissan said the Altima remained important to its lineup and that it planned a 2027 model. That is information about one model line, not evidence that resolves Nissan’s overall financial position or the outcome of the investor search: Carscoops’ Altima report.
