The companies ended their integration talks in February 2025, and Nissan CEO Iván Espinosa said in July 2026 that there was “no discussion around integration.” Nissan and Honda are still working together on specific vehicle-technology projects, but that cooperation is not a merger announcement. Whether they revisit a corporate deal in the future remains uncertain.
What is the current status of a Nissan-Honda merger?
The merger process was not completed: Nissan and Honda terminated their memorandum of understanding (MOU) on February 13, 2025, ending their integration discussions. The MOU had been an agreement to consider a business integration, not a definitive merger agreement or a decision to combine the companies. The companies’ termination announcement and Honda’s original announcement explain the distinction.
In a July 8, 2026 interview, Nissan CEO Iván Espinosa said, “There’s no discussion around integration,” describing the companies’ conversations as focused on projects that could benefit both sides. Yahoo Finance’s interview report reflects what he said at that time; it does not rule out every possible future negotiation.
Why did the 2025 integration talks end?
According to the companies’ joint announcement, Honda proposed changing the structure from a joint holding company to a parent-subsidiary arrangement in which Honda would be the parent and Nissan its subsidiary through a share exchange. The companies said they concluded that ending the integration discussions would better support decision speed and execution of management measures in a volatile market. This is the explanation they gave publicly, not proof of other reported or speculative motives. Read the joint announcement.

How is the current partnership different from a merger?
On August 31, 2026, Nissan and Honda announced a joint development agreement to standardize vehicle software and electronic systems for future software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The agreement covers multiple core electronic control units (ECUs), an in-vehicle operating system, parts of middleware, and vehicle-control software. The companies plan to apply the resulting electronic/electrical architecture in next-generation SDVs from fiscal 2029 onward. That is a defined technology collaboration, not evidence that corporate integration talks have restarted. See the companies’ announcement.
| Dimension | Integration proposal | Documented collaboration |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Corporate integration considered under an MOU | Joint development and standardization of SDV software and electronic systems |
| Status | MOU terminated February 13, 2025 | Agreement announced August 31, 2026 |
| What it establishes | No merger completion or active integration process | Cooperation on specified vehicle technologies, not a merger |
| Timing | The proposed August 2026 effective date was a tentative plan superseded by the MOU’s termination | Application of the shared architecture planned from fiscal 2029 onward |
Could Nissan and Honda revisit a merger later?
It remains possible in the broad sense that the companies could choose to explore a deal in the future, but the announcements and interview cited here do not establish that they are doing so now. The reliable distinction is between an uncertain future possibility and an active negotiation: the former cannot be ruled out; the latter was expressly denied by Espinosa in July 2026.
