Why there is no dependable annual maintenance price
A GT-R R35 maintenance budget is best built from scheduled service and the car’s condition, not a universal yearly average. The available evidence does not establish a representative current U.S. annual cost. A real budget also depends on variables beyond scheduled maintenance, including insurance, fuel, taxes, financing, storage, depreciation, regional labor rates and infrequent major repairs; no reliable figures for those items are established here.
For a useful estimate, compare quotes using the same model year and service tasks. Distinguish routine consumables from transmission and differential work, and account for mileage, elapsed time, driving use, quote date, location and whether the provider is a dealer or an independent GT-R specialist. The available owner account does not establish that one type of shop is cheaper by a particular amount.
What Nissan’s schedules say—and why model year matters
Nissan publishes model-year-specific maintenance information. Do not assume a schedule for one R35 year applies to another; check the owner’s manual or service guide for the car’s year and follow the schedule that fits its use.

Oil and filter: 2024 U.S. lookup
Nissan USA’s 2024 GT-R component lookup says to replace engine oil and the filter every 6,000 miles or 6 months under both standard and severe conditions. That interval is a 2024 schedule reference, not a blanket rule for every R35 year. See Nissan’s 2024 GT-R maintenance lookup.
Transmission and differential fluids: 2018 schedule
Nissan’s 2018 service guide lists transmission oil and front- and rear-differential oil replacement at 36,000 miles or 36 months, alongside inspection items. How hard use and fluid temperatures affect service
Mileage and time are not the only considerations. Nissan’s 2020 guide shortens intervals after specified high fluid temperatures. For engine oil at 230°F (110°C) to 266°F (130°C), it specifies an oil-and-filter change every 3,000 miles (5,000 km). It also specifies 3,000-mile (5,000-km) intervals for transmission and differential fluids within their respective elevated temperature ranges, and directs immediate changes when specified maximum temperature thresholds are exceeded. Check the guide for the applicable thresholds and instructions for each fluid; do not infer them from the engine-oil range. Consult Nissan’s 2020 GT-R service and maintenance guide.
Driving that raises fluid temperatures can therefore change the maintenance timetable. Keep records of the car’s use and service, and have a qualified shop assess the correct interval when the vehicle has seen hard use or elevated fluid temperatures.

Which fluids and components belong in a service plan
Nissan’s 2020 guide lists Mobil 1 0W-40 or an equivalent for engine oil; Genuine Nissan Transmission Oil R35 Special or an equivalent; Differential Oil R35 COMPETITION type 2189E or an equivalent for both differentials; and Genuine Nissan Brake Fluid R35 Special II or an equivalent. Nissan states in that guide: “The VR38 engine with its plasma-sprayed bores was developed using this oil.” The surrounding guidance identifies Mobil 1 0W-40 as the factory-fill oil. Confirm the correct specification in the guide for the car’s model year before selecting a fluid or authorizing a service.
Nissan’s maintenance lookup also includes items such as brake pads and rotors, brake fluid, air filters, coolant, spark plugs, alignment and suspension components. These are sensible inspection and budgeting categories, but the cited schedule does not establish a universal lifespan or current replacement price for each. Condition, use and service history matter.

What published owner cost examples can—and cannot—tell you
One U.S. owner’s 2023 Reddit post about a 2020 GT-R offers historical examples, not a current shop quote or an average. The owner reported about $1,100 for two- and four-year maintenance, including an oil change, coolant flush, brake-fluid flush and air filters, and attributed about $900 to labor at a dealer. The same owner estimated about $3,500–$4,000 for the 36,000-mile transmission and front- and rear-differential fluid service. These figures describe one owner’s account; they should not be treated as present-day prices or as what another vehicle or shop will charge. Read the owner’s cost discussion.
The post also estimated summer tires at about $1,600–$1,900 plus roughly $200 for installation, with replacement timing said to range from 10,000 to 20,000 miles depending on driving. That is likewise a single historical estimate, not a current tire quote or guaranteed tire life. Obtain a current quote for the tire size and specification appropriate to the car.

How to build a useful R35 maintenance budget
- Identify the exact car. Record its model year, mileage, service history and any known schedule designation; use the matching Nissan guide or lookup.
- List work due by time and mileage. Separate recurring oil service from major driveline-fluid work and condition-based inspections.
- Account for use. Ask whether the car’s driving and fluid-temperature history changes service intervals under its year’s guide.
- Request itemized local quotes. Compare the same parts, fluids, labor and tasks across qualified providers. Date and location matter when comparing prices.
- Keep a maintenance reserve for unknowns. The cited schedules and single owner account do not price every repair or predict when wear items and major components will need attention.
