The system launched June 5, 2025. Nintendo later raised its FY26 forecast to 19 million and reported actual FY26 sales of 19.86 million hardware units.
What did Nintendo’s 15 million Switch 2 forecast mean?
On May 8, 2025, Nintendo forecast sales of 15.00 million Switch 2 hardware units for FY26, the company’s fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The forecast period began before the console launched on June 5, 2025, so it covered less than ten months of availability—not a rolling year from launch. Nintendo’s FY26 forecast also projected 45.00 million software units. That software forecast excluded copies bundled with hardware or other products, such as Mario Kart World in the console bundle.

How did the forecast compare with sales?
| Date reported | Period and measure | Switch 2 hardware | Switch 2 software |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 8, 2025 | Original FY26 forecast | 15.00 million | 45.00 million; bundled software excluded |
| February 3, 2026 | Revised FY26 forecast | 19.00 million | 48.00 million; included some bundled units through Dec. 31, 2025, but not bundles from Jan. 1 onward |
| May 8, 2026 | FY26 actual | 19.86 million | 48.71 million; included approximately 12.60 million software units bundled with other products |
| May 8, 2026 | FY27 forecast, year ending March 31, 2027 | 16.50 million | 60.00 million; future bundles excluded |
| As of June 30, 2026 | Cumulative sales | 23.68 million | 58.17 million |
The original hardware forecast was exceeded: the reported FY26 actual was 4.86 million units above 15 million. Nintendo had already raised its forecast to 19 million in February 2026. These are different snapshots—an initial forecast, a revision, and an annual actual—not interchangeable measures. The June 30 cumulative total covers a different period and should not be substituted for FY26 sales. Nintendo’s sales-data page lists the cumulative total.
Software figures need extra care because Nintendo’s treatment of bundled copies changed across these forecasts and results. The original 45 million forecast excluded bundles, while FY26 actual software included approximately 12.60 million units bundled with other products. Comparing those software totals without the bundle qualification can give a misleading impression of like-for-like performance.

Why did Nintendo initially forecast 15 million?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the forecast was not based on a production-capacity limit. In the company’s May 2025 financial-results Q&A, he explained that Nintendo wanted to maintain sales momentum beyond launch and through the year. He also cited the Switch 2’s relatively high price compared with the original Switch as a challenge to sustaining that momentum through the holiday season and beyond. Nintendo’s May 2025 Q&A records his explanation.
The launch also affected Nintendo’s financial outlook. The company said a greater share of hardware sales would put pressure on gross margin because Switch 2 hardware had a lower gross profit ratio than original Switch hardware. Nintendo’s May 2025 FY26 forecast was 1,900.0 billion yen in net sales and 320.0 billion yen in operating profit; those were forecasts, not reported actual results.

What is Nintendo’s latest Switch 2 sales forecast?
For FY27, the year ending March 31, 2027, Nintendo forecast 16.50 million Switch 2 hardware units and 60.00 million software units. The hardware forecast is below FY26’s 19.86 million actual. Nintendo described the prior year’s launch sales as unusually strong and cited price revisions as a factor in the expected year-on-year decline, while characterizing 16.50 million as a solid second-year level. The figures and outlook appear in Nintendo’s May 2026 results and outlook.
For context, Nintendo defines sell-in as unit sales by the Nintendo group to business partners. Its FY26 materials describe sell-through as the company’s internal estimate of sales to individual consumers. Annual reported results and cumulative sales totals also have different time windows; check the measure and cutoff before comparing figures.
