Nintendo said Nintendo Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide from its June 5, 2025 launch through June 8. Announced June 11, the figure covers consumer purchases across several system configurations, and Nintendo called it the highest global first-four-day sales total for any Nintendo hardware.
What Nintendo’s 3.5 million figure counts
The four-day total includes the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Set, as well as the Japanese-language and multi-language systems sold exclusively in Japan. It is a worldwide tally across those configurations, not a count of one standalone console SKU. Nintendo’s announcement describes the figure as based on its internal data, rather than as an independently audited total. Nintendo’s June 11 announcement gives the launch window and the included configurations.

Nintendo later characterized the measure as sell-through: units retailers and Nintendo’s direct-sales websites sold to individual consumers. That differs from sell-in, which measures units sold to business partners. The distinction matters because a consumer-sales figure should not be treated as a count of shipments into stores. Nintendo explains the measure in its Q1 financial report.
Why Nintendo called it a record
Nintendo described the result as the highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware within its first four days. The claim is specifically about Nintendo hardware, worldwide, over the first four days; it is not a comparison with every console maker’s launch or with results measured over a different period. Nintendo’s U.S. announcement also quoted Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser: “Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go.” Nintendo of America’s release contains the quote and its U.S. launch announcement.

How the launch figure compares with later milestones
Subsequent figures mark different dates and should not be read as revisions to the four-day result.
| Figure | Period and measure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| More than 3.5 million | June 5–8, 2025; worldwide consumer sell-through | Nintendo’s first-four-day announcement. |
| 5.82 million hardware units | Through June 30, 2025 | Nintendo’s later hardware-sales total in its Q1 report. |
| 5.63 million Mario Kart World units | Through June 30, 2025 | Game units, including copies bundled with hardware; not an additional console total. |
| More than 15 million | Cumulative global sell-through by the fourth week of December 2025 | A later cumulative milestone in Nintendo’s February 2026 investor presentation. |
| 17.37 million hardware units | FY26 Q1–Q3 | A separate hardware figure for a different reporting window; it should not be substituted for the December sell-through milestone. |
The June figures appear in Nintendo’s Q1 report; the later milestones are in Nintendo’s February 2026 investor presentation. Their different dates and measures explain why the figures are not interchangeable.

How independently verified is the number?
The 3.5 million-plus count is Nintendo’s reported figure, drawn from its internal data. The available announcement and later financial reporting do not establish a separately measured third-party global count for the first four days. The Associated Press also reported Nintendo’s announcement, but its coverage repeats the company’s stated total rather than providing an independent audit. The AP report is useful confirmation of what Nintendo announced, not independent verification of the count.
