Nintendo Switch 2 U.S. retail preorders began April 24, 2025, ahead of the console’s June 5, 2025 launch. Those dates have passed, so this is a historical guide—not a current stock alert. Nintendo’s announced U.S. launch prices were $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle; neither figure establishes today’s price or availability.
What happened on April 24, 2025?
Nintendo of America announced on April 18, 2025, that “Retail pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 will begin on April 24, 2025.” The console launched June 5, 2025. How did Nintendo Store digital and physical prepurchases differ?
Nintendo Support describes two different payment and fulfillment timelines for Nintendo Store purchases. These general processes should not be mistaken for terms governing console reservations or purchases from another retailer.

Purchase eligibility and fulfillment were not uniform across markets. Nintendo used a separate registration-and-selection process in Australia and New Zealand, with local account, subscription, gameplay, and delivery requirements. Those terms were regional, not universal. In the United States, Target said its own April 24 preorder allocation “sold out in less than two hours” in a May 29, 2025 announcement. That describes Target’s allocation only; it is not a market-wide sales figure or a forecast for another restock.

What should owners know about original Switch games?
Do not assume every original Switch game will work identically on Switch 2. Nintendo Co., Ltd. stated on January 16, 2025: “Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Check the status of each game you care about rather than assuming the entire library transfers without limitations.
