Short answer: A March 2025 leak reported that GameStop might offer up to $175 in trade-in credit toward a Nintendo Switch 2. The reported amount was $175 for a Switch OLED, $125 for a standard Switch, and $100 for a Switch Lite. However, this was reported as a leak—not a fully confirmed, permanently available GameStop promotion—and it is not currently verified as a live 2026 offer.
Before trading in your console, check GameStop’s current trade-in page and call the specific store. Confirm the promotion, eligible model, condition requirements, accessories, redemption rules, and Switch 2 inventory.

The reported GameStop trade-in values
Tom’s Guide reported the deal on April 3, 2025, after a March 31 social-media post circulated the alleged promotional amounts. The figures were attributed to an X post from MikeOdysseyYT and a TechRadar report.
| Existing console | Reported credit | Approximate Switch 2 price after credit |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch OLED | $175 | $274.99 |
| Standard Nintendo Switch, V1 or V2 | $125 | $324.99 |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | $100 | $349.99 |
The calculations use Nintendo’s current U.S. standalone Switch 2 MSRP of $449.99. They are approximate, pre-tax totals—not guaranteed checkout prices.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The original 2025 coverage discussed an expected $399 Switch 2 price in its example. Nintendo’s current listed MSRP is $449.99, so older articles may show lower post-credit totals.
Was the $175 offer officially confirmed?
The evidence supports calling this a reported leak, not automatically a confirmed or current deal:
- Leaked: A March 31, 2025 social-media post reportedly showed the tiered credits.
- Reported: Tom’s Guide published the figures on April 3, 2025 and attributed them to the post and TechRadar.
- Confirmed: The report said GameStop had not yet published complete official terms.
- Currently available: The accessible GameStop trade page provides general rules but does not verify that historical $175 Switch 2 promotion.
In other words, “up to $175 off” did not mean every Switch owner received $175. The maximum reportedly applied to the Switch OLED tier, while standard Switch and Lite owners received less. “Credit” also should not be treated as cash unless the applicable GameStop terms specifically say so.

How to check whether a comparable deal is live now
Do not rely on a search result or an old article. Use this verification process before handing over your console:
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
- Open GameStop’s live trade page and look for the exact Switch model and any Switch 2 promotion.
- Check whether the offer applies to the standalone console, a game bundle, or a specific SKU. Nintendo’s official page advertises Switch 2 bundles, but that does not establish that a GameStop trade promotion applies equally to every bundle.
- Call your local store and ask whether the promotion is active today.
- Confirm whether the amount is store credit, gift-card value, or an instant purchase discount.
- Ask whether the credit must be used in the same transaction, whether a preorder or in-stock console is required, and whether membership is necessary.
- Ask which accessories and condition standards are required for the promotional amount.
- Check local inventory through GameStop’s Nintendo Switch 2 category, then confirm availability with the store.
GameStop’s general terms say trade values can depend on condition, required components, location, and GameStop’s discretion. The program is limited to select products and select U.S. and Guam stores, and pricing or promotions may vary by location.
Prepare your Switch before trading it in
Identify the exact model
Determine whether you have a Switch OLED, a standard Switch, or a Switch Lite. Do not assume a Switch Lite qualifies for an OLED-level credit. Also distinguish between the original standard Switch and the later battery-revision model; the reported table grouped standard V1 and V2 together, but a current trade quote may identify them separately.
Gather the components
- Console
- Joy-Con controllers for dockable Switch models
- Dock for dockable models
- Official AC adapter
- HDMI cable
- Any other components listed in the live promotion
Missing components can reduce the highest available trade value. GameStop’s general terms do not prove that every listed accessory is universally required for every offer, so confirm the requirements for the specific promotion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTest the hardware
Charge the console before visiting the store. Check the screen, buttons, Joy-Con connection, charging port, Wi-Fi, game-card slot, and dock output. Look for cracked plastic, screen damage, severe scratches, liquid damage, controller drift, or nonresponsive controls. A console that will not power on or charge may receive little or no value.

Protect your data
- Remove any game card and microSD card.
- Back up or transfer important saves, screenshots, videos, and user data.
- Review Nintendo’s official Switch 2 setup and transfer resources; save-transfer behavior can vary by data type.
- Remove your Nintendo Account and initialize the console only after confirming that your data has been transferred.
What can reduce or eliminate the credit?
- Missing dock, charger, Joy-Cons, HDMI cable, or other required components.
- A console that does not power on, charge, connect to a dock, or read game cards.
- Cracked screens, damaged USB-C ports, severe cosmetic damage, water damage, or broken plastic.
- Joy-Con drift, faulty buttons, or other controller problems.
- An expired promotion or an offer limited to certain dates, stores, memberships, or inventory.
- A Switch Lite being incorrectly treated as an OLED model.
- A difference between an online estimate and the store’s inspection.
- Credit restricted to a qualifying Switch 2 purchase rather than unrestricted cash.
- No Switch 2 inventory at the participating store.
GameStop’s terms reserve the right to vary, modify, suspend, or cancel trades. A staff member’s inspection—not an old reported table—determines the final offer.
GameStop trade-in versus selling privately
| Option | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| GameStop | Fast, convenient, and potentially usable immediately toward a Switch 2 | Credit may be lower than a private-sale net amount and may be less flexible than cash |
| Private sale | May produce more cash, especially for clean OLED systems, special editions, or bundles | Requires listing, messages, negotiation, packing, shipping or meetups, fees, and fraud precautions |
| Keep it | Preserves a backup console and access for another household user | You receive no immediate funding for the upgrade |
Compare the confirmed GameStop credit with the realistic net proceeds from a private sale—not the seller’s asking price. Subtract marketplace fees, shipping, taxes, payment risk, and the value of your time. Extra controllers, cases, and physical games may be worth more when sold separately.
When keeping your old Switch makes more sense
Trade-in is not automatically the best financial decision. Keep the console if multiple people use it, you want a backup system, you have not finished transferring digital games or saves, or you own a special-edition model with potential collector value. Keeping it may also be sensible if you are still unsure whether Switch 2 compatibility and features meet your needs.

- Switch OLED owner: The reported $175 credit would have been the strongest tier, but verify the current offer before assuming that value.
- Standard Switch owner: The reported $125 credit may be convenient, but compare it with the console’s realistic net private-sale value.
- Switch Lite owner: The reported $100 credit was the lowest tier and should not be confused with the OLED amount.
- Busy buyer: GameStop may be worthwhile if convenience and a same-day transaction matter more than maximizing cash.
- Collector or bundle owner: A private sale may better capture the value of a special edition, accessories, or physical games.
- Family or uncertain buyer: Keeping the existing console may provide more value than immediately trading it away.
Do not take the historical $175 figure to a store expecting it to apply. Treat it as a reported 2025 promotion unless GameStop’s current terms or your local store confirm a comparable offer.
