The delay did not change the console’s planned June 5 launch: Nintendo set U.S. retail preorders for April 24, 2025, and the system launched on schedule.
What changed—and what did not
Nintendo had announced on April 2, 2025, that the Switch 2 would launch June 5. The company then pushed back the planned U.S. preorder opening of April 9. On April 18, it announced that U.S. retail preorders would begin April 24. Nintendo’s April 18 announcement apologized for the delay and said it hoped the new date would reduce customer uncertainty.

The preorder schedule changed; the launch date did not. The console launched June 5, 2025. The Associated Press reported that Nintendo said it sold more than 3.5 million systems in the first four days; that is Nintendo’s reported figure, not an independently described audit. The Associated Press reported the sales figure.
Why Nintendo postponed preorders
Nintendo said it needed time to assess “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” That is the company’s stated explanation. It does not establish that tariffs were the only factor behind the decision, or specify how much the April delay was attributable to tariffs rather than other market considerations.

Later, in its May 2025 financial-results Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described the company’s general approach: “Our basic policy is that for any country or region, if tariffs are imposed, we recognize them as a part of the cost and incorporate them into the price.” Nintendo said its FY2026 forecast assumed U.S. tariff rates effective April 10 would continue through that fiscal year, except that packaged software was assumed exempt under an April 11 announcement. It factored a negative profit impact of several tens of billions of yen into that forecast. These later comments provide context for Nintendo’s tariff exposure, but are not a detailed retrospective account of the preorder pause. What the delay meant for U.S. prices
When Nintendo set the new preorder date on April 18, it kept the previously announced U.S. launch prices for the console and bundle. Those were manufacturer suggested retail prices announced for 2025, not current retailer quotes.

Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation set a U.S. Switch 2 MSRP increase from $449.99 to $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo described the decision as a review of its business outlook in light of changing market conditions. It should not be presented as a consequence of the April 2025 preorder delay: the later announcement concerns a separate pricing decision made more than a year afterward.
