Indian IT shares rallied intraday on August 28, 2026: the Nifty IT index was up 3.2% at 10:26 a.m., while LTM gained 5%, TCS and HCL Technologies rose 4% each, and Tech Mahindra advanced 3%. Business Standard attributed the buying interest to a strong US market close following Nvidia’s upbeat revenue forecast. These are figures from that session, not current prices or proof that the rally would continue.

What rose, and by how much?

Business Standard reported the following intraday changes on August 28, 2026. The index reading is a snapshot at 10:26 a.m.; the company moves are the same-session figures in the report, not closing prices.

Share or index Reported intraday move
Nifty IT index Up 3.2% at 10:26 a.m.
LTM Up 5%
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Up 4%
HCL Technologies Up 4%
Tech Mahindra Up 3%

The Nifty IT was the strongest sectoral index at the time of the report. “Up to 5%” refers to the largest move among the named shares; it does not mean every company gained 5%.

Why did Indian IT shares rise?

Business Standard linked the rally to a favorable US-market backdrop after Nvidia issued a strong revenue forecast. In the preceding Thursday session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.20%, the S&P 500 gained 0.72%, and the Nasdaq advanced 1.57%, according to the publication. Its report quoted Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, founder and CEO of HST Wealth, on the US-market reaction.

That is a reported explanation for the day’s buying, not proof that Nvidia’s forecast was the sole cause. Shares can move on several influences at once, and a broad technology-sector lift does not establish that every Indian IT company had a new company-specific development.

What Nvidia reported—and what it does not prove

Nvidia’s August 26, 2026, release for the second quarter of fiscal 2027 reported $96.2 billion in total revenue, up 106% year over year, and $89.0 billion in data-center revenue, up 117% year over year. These were company-reported results for the quarter ended July 26, 2026. They are actual quarterly figures, distinct from the upbeat revenue forecast cited in market coverage as a catalyst for the Indian rally.

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang characterized demand this way in the release: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” That statement describes Nvidia’s view of its business and AI demand; it is not independent evidence that Indian IT providers will see higher revenue or profits. Indian IT companies have different services, customers, contracts, and exposure to AI-related work.

Why the rally did not settle the sector outlook

The same Business Standard report described Indian IT companies’ Q1 earnings as mixed. It relayed concerns about a higher comparison base, slower growth, AI-led pricing deflation, weaker discretionary spending, high Federal Reserve rates, crowded IT budgets, and competitive pressure. These factors can weigh on client spending, contract pricing, or growth even when global technology shares are advancing.

The report also noted optimism around deal pipelines and better demand commentary for H2 FY2027. A pipeline is not the same as signed work converted into revenue, and improved commentary is not a guarantee of results. The report’s brokerage preferences and outlooks are attributed opinions, not assured outcomes or individualized investment advice.

It further said the Nifty IT index had rebounded 22% from its July 2026 lows while remaining negative year to date. That is the dated comparison reported on August 28, 2026—not a present-day return or evidence by itself of a lasting recovery.

How to assess the move as an investor

A one-session percentage gain shows how prices moved during a particular market session; it does not tell you whether a share is attractively valued or whether its earnings outlook has improved. Anyone assessing the companies beyond this news event would need company-level evidence, not just the sector’s direction.

  • Compare the same-session moves: use the reported percentages as a dated snapshot, not as a ranking of long-term prospects.
  • Check earnings and guidance: look for company-specific changes in revenue expectations, margins, and client demand.
  • Track deal conversion: distinguish announced pipelines from contracts won and revenue actually recognized.
  • Consider pricing and spending risks: assess how each company’s margins and growth could respond to AI-related pricing pressure and slower discretionary budgets.
  • Account for valuation: a strong business or market rally does not, on its own, make a share cheap or suitable for your portfolio.

The August 28 move answers why these shares were stronger that morning; it does not answer whether they would keep rising. The cited report and Nvidia’s results offer context, but neither provides a reliable forecast for the next session or a reason on its own to buy or sell.
