The timestamps matter. Index levels and sector moves can change through the day, so the 12:10 and 1:20 p.m. reports are separate snapshots, not simultaneous readings. Neither report gives the final close. ETMarkets; Upstox.

Why did the market fall after opening higher?
ETMarkets listed several possible pressures, rather than establishing a single cause: higher bond yields, continued foreign institutional investor (FII) selling, escalating Middle East conflict, weak Asian market cues and profit-taking after the previous week’s gains. These are contemporaneous explanations for the move, not proof that any one factor caused it.

External pressures and investor flows
V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, told ETMarkets: “The market is going through a stage wherein external headwinds are dominating the domestic tailwinds,” The report attributed to him the view that elevated crude prices and US yields could weigh on sentiment, while domestic institutional investors were absorbing foreign selling. ETMarkets also cited net foreign equity selling of ₹45,125 crore in October’s first six sessions; that figure is reported market-flow context, not an independently checked exchange or depository statistic.

Upstox reported that bank shares were lower after an RBI measure raised the daily cash reserve ratio (CRR) maintenance requirement to 99% from 90%, effective October 16, 2026. It also cited liquidity measures and bond issuance in its discussion of pressure on banks. That context may help explain the banking weakness described in the report, but it does not establish that the RBI measure alone drove the broader market decline.

What should investors take from the intraday move?
A sharp reversal can reflect several pressures arriving together, and a midday index quote cannot show whether losses persisted into the close. Treat the reported levels and sector moves as time-specific information, not a completed-session result. Naresh Biyani, Founder and CEO of Capwise Financial Services Pvt Ltd, told Upstox: “For equities, I don’t expect a sharp sell-off, but the easy money phase is behind us.” That is an attributed market opinion, not a forecast or a guarantee about subsequent prices.
