Former Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, Texas, according to Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle’s announcement reported by The Associated Press. President Donald Trump approved the firing-squad plan after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended it. The execution has not taken place; the date could be affected by further legal proceedings.
What has been approved and scheduled
The announcements describe separate steps. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said Hegseth recommended an Army firing squad and Trump approved the plan, CBS News reported. Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle subsequently set the time and place, announcing December 3, 2026, at Fort Hood, The Associated Press reported. The available reporting does not say Trump selected the date.
The date is a scheduled future event, not a completed execution. The military has not carried out an execution since 1961, according to The Associated Press. If Hasan’s execution proceeds, it would be the first U.S. military execution since then.
Why Hasan was sentenced to death
Hasan, an Army psychiatrist and major, carried out the November 5, 2009 shooting at Fort Hood. A military jury found him guilty in August 2013 of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. The attack killed 13 people and injured more than 30, The Associated Press reported; the Congressional Research Service records the specific conviction counts.

Can the execution date still be delayed?
Yes. Hasan could seek habeas corpus review in civilian federal court, a process that could delay the execution, according to The Associated Press. CBS News reported that the Supreme Court declined in 2025 to consider Hasan’s 2024 request concerning courtroom access during discussions involving his attorneys. Those reports do not establish whether he has filed a new case since the date was announced. The December 3 date is therefore scheduled, but the available information does not establish that it is legally certain.
