February 2025 reports said DOGE-associated workforce reductions affected the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including staff who assess automated-vehicle safety. The Washington Post reported an expected agency-wide loss of 70–80 employees—about one-tenth of NHTSA—and a disproportionately large reduction in its small automated-vehicle safety group. NHTSA, by contrast, described the number of positions cut as “modest,” according to the Associated Press. The counts were reported estimates, not a published, independently audited staffing tally.
What was reported about the NHTSA cuts?
The Washington Post reported that 70–80 NHTSA employees were expected to leave, roughly 10 percent of the agency, citing people briefed on the reductions. It also reported that the specialized group working on automated-vehicle safety would lose a substantially larger share of its staff than the agency overall. The figures describe reported expectations; they are not an official headcount of completed departures. The Washington Post’s February 2025 account is the direct source for those estimates.
The Associated Press reported on February 22 that NHTSA characterized the number of positions cut as a “modest” amount and said it would “enforce the law on all manufacturers of motor vehicles and equipment.” The agency statement and the reported estimates have different scopes and origins: one is an agency characterization, while the other is a journalist-attributed estimate. Neither should be treated as an audited final count. The AP report also described the agency’s enforcement role and Tesla-related safety work.
A Senate minority staff memorandum cited a figure of 30 NHTSA workers cut in February, but its footnote points to Financial Times reporting rather than an independent agency tally. That secondhand figure may cover a different scope or overlap with other reported changes; it should not be added to the Washington Post estimate. The memorandum is corroboration that cuts were reported, not a separate verified accounting.

Why does the effect on automated-vehicle staff matter?
NHTSA investigates possible motor-vehicle safety defects and oversees compliance across manufacturers. Its work can include examining crash patterns, seeking information from automakers, and assessing whether a safety defect or regulatory violation requires action. Automated-driving and driver-assistance systems raise questions about how a vehicle behaves, what a driver is expected to do, and what crash information the manufacturer must report.
According to AP, NHTSA investigations have involved Tesla vehicles using partially automated systems, and crash-data reporting requirements apply to automakers using self-driving technology. The issue is therefore not that NHTSA regulates Tesla alone: it is whether the federal regulator has enough expertise and staff to scrutinize safety issues across the industry, including Tesla.

What is the connection to Tesla?
Tesla’s driver-assistance systems have been a subject of both investigations and technical engagement with NHTSA. In April 2024, the agency’s Office of Defects Investigation documented a request for a technical briefing and Tesla’s briefing concerning Full Self-Driving (Supervised). NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety materials provide the agency’s context for its oversight of these technologies.
NHTSA’s public release index later listed an investigation announced September 4, 2026, concerning Tesla Cybercab self-certification following deployment in Austin. The agency’s press-release index records that later public action. It shows that NHTSA continued to take visible action; by itself, it does not establish whether the 2025 staffing changes reduced the agency’s capacity or affected any particular investigation.

Do the reports show that Tesla investigations were weakened or stopped?
No. The cited accounts document reported staffing reductions, a reported disproportionate impact on automated-vehicle safety personnel, and later public agency activity. They do not measure whether investigations became slower, less thorough, or less effective, nor do they establish a change in traffic-safety outcomes caused by the cuts. An announced investigation is evidence of public oversight activity, not a measure of the staff time, expertise, or results behind that work.
