The durable strategy is to sell useful game experiences—not the promise of resale profits—and to make each asset’s function, supply, transfer rules, and license clear before a player pays.
How can an NFT game make money?
An NFT is a design choice for representing an item or right; it is not, by itself, a business model. A studio can combine blockchain features with paid access, free-to-play purchases, subscriptions, or non-tokenized items. The central question is what players receive in the game and whether that value remains when trading slows or token prices fall. Ethereum.org’s gaming overview describes blockchain gaming uses, while the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) discusses how game assets can move through platform and external markets.
Which monetization models can a studio use?

This is a decision framework, not a published industry ranking. Compare options by player utility, onboarding and wallet friction, reliance on resale volume, supply and sink controls, platform compatibility, security and recourse, IP clarity, and resilience if resale or token prices decline.
How do you design NFT sales around player value?
- Define the value before the token. Specify the game function: for example, whether an item changes appearance, unlocks access, or affects progression. Do not rely on scarcity alone to explain why a player should want it.
- State exactly what the sale includes. Describe supply, transferability, any restrictions, and what happens if the game or marketplace changes. Avoid leaving players to infer rights or utility from a token’s name or image.
- Set sustainable supply and uses. Consider how new items enter the game and whether items or tokens are consumed or otherwise removed through play. If rewards are issued without meaningful uses, incentives may become detached from the game’s actual demand.
- Test the design without resale. Ask whether the item remains worthwhile to own and use if its external market is inactive or its price falls. If the answer is no, the product depends heavily on speculation rather than game utility.
- Keep the non-blockchain path legible. Explain which features require a wallet or token and which can be accessed through ordinary game purchases. This lets players understand the trade-off before encountering wallet setup or transaction steps.
What should the game disclose about ownership and rights?
Owning a token does not automatically mean owning the artwork’s copyright or having unrestricted rights to use it. The U.S. Copyright Office and USPTO NFT study, released March 12, 2024, describes possible NFT uses for remuneration and licensing while noting uncertainty about which IP rights are implicated in creation, marketing, and transfer.

Write the license separately from the token description. Specify permitted uses, limits on commercial use or modification, and what rights—if any—transfer with the token. Do not imply that a buyer receives copyright unless the applicable agreement actually grants it.
What platform rules affect NFT monetization?
For Google Play distribution, the live Blockchain-based Content policy says apps that sell or enable users to earn tokenized digital assets must make the required declaration and identify tokenized assets in in-app product details. It also says developers may not promote or glamorize potential earnings from playing or trading.
For ordinary apps outside eligible gambling or real-money game pathways, the policy disallows accepting monetary value for a chance to obtain an NFT of unknown value. Purchased NFTs must be used in the game to enhance the experience or aid progression, and NFT wagering for real-world-value prizes is disallowed. The policy gives examples including undisclosed NFT bundles and pay-to-play social casino games that reward NFTs. Check the live policy and applicable general fees and digital-purchase rules for the target distribution and territory before launch; platform requirements can change.

Is play-to-earn a sustainable revenue strategy?
Rewards may encourage participation, but a game should not present playing or trading as a reliable source of income. If players need new buyers or rising token prices to make participation worthwhile, the economy is exposed to declining demand. A more resilient design gives assets an in-game use independent of resale and treats trading activity as optional rather than as the promised payoff.
Axie Infinity illustrates why user counts are not proof of durable earnings. The CFPB’s April 4, 2024 report says the game reached over 2.7 million daily active users at its height, describes NFT pets and tradable tokens alongside rising entry costs and a hierarchy of investors, managers, and workers, and says the ecosystem largely fell apart in 2022 following a breach. That is a historical peak, not a current user figure or evidence that players had sustainable income.

NIST’s IR 8472, “Non-Fungible Token Security,” published in March 2024, identifies 27 potential security issues in NFT systems. It is a risk reference, not a guarantee that blockchain use makes an asset secure. Review smart contracts, custody and account recovery, metadata availability, and transaction flows as parts of the game’s security design.

The CFPB’s April 2024 report describes gaming assets moving through platform and external markets and contrasts operators’ buyer-beware posture with protections conventional banking and payment services may offer, such as recourse after unauthorized transactions. Players should be told what support and recovery mechanisms the game actually provides rather than being led to assume they have the same protections as with a conventional payment. The CFPB says it monitors markets regardless of infrastructure where financial products or services may be offered; that does not mean every NFT game is subject to the same financial regime.
What legal questions should be reviewed before launch?
Classification depends on the product, its claims, and the jurisdiction; an NFT label alone does not settle the question. An August 8, 2025 written submission by the SEC Crypto Task Force discusses a framework under which NFTs with utility or consumptive value at sale would be presumed not to be securities, while stock-like features, dividend rights, or revenue-sharing commitments may be treated differently. It also says resale royalties alone should not trigger a presumption of securities status. This is a submission, not a binding Commission rule or final determination. Studios should obtain qualified legal advice for the specific product and jurisdictions in which it will be offered. Read the SEC submission.
