New World: Aeternum is no longer receiving content updates, but it did not shut down when Amazon announced the end of development. Season 10 and the Nighthaven update were its final content release in October 2025. Amazon delisted the game on January 15, 2026, and says its servers will close on January 31, 2027. In-game purchases ended July 20, 2026.

What “no more updates” means

Amazon Games said on October 28, 2025, that it would stop releasing new content for New World: Aeternum. Its announcement said that, after four years of content updates and a major console release, continued support with new content was no longer sustainable. Season 10 and Nighthaven, released that October, were the final content release for PC and consoles. Amazon’s October announcement did not mean immediate server closure: at the time, Amazon said it intended to keep the game online through 2026.

Amazon’s later notice set a final service date. The game was delisted on January 15, 2026, and is scheduled to be taken offline on January 31, 2027. Owners who purchased it can continue playing and reinstall it until that date. Amazon’s January 2026 update says players will not be able to access it on any platform after the shutdown.

New World: Aeternum shutdown timeline

Date What changed
October 28, 2025 Amazon announced that Season 10 and Nighthaven were the final content release. It initially said servers were intended to remain available through 2026.
January 15, 2026 Amazon delisted the game and announced that service would end January 31, 2027. Existing purchasers could keep playing and reinstalling until shutdown.
July 20, 2026 Purchases of Marks of Fortune and other in-game items stopped, according to Amazon’s FAQ.
January 31, 2027 Scheduled permanent server shutdown on all platforms.

What players can still do before shutdown

Amazon says the game will remain online until January 31, 2027, but it will not receive new content or further server merges. The company says it will continue monitoring bugs and performance, and that world bosses and bonus weeks will continue until shutdown. Those activities do not change the announced end date or restore ongoing development. Details are in Amazon’s FAQ.

New World: Aeternum requires a persistent internet connection and has no offline mode, as its Steam listing states. Once Amazon closes the servers, owners will no longer be able to play through the supported service. Buying or reinstalling the game does not provide a way to play offline or preserve access beyond the shutdown.

How the Amazon layoffs relate to the decision

Amazon announced broader job cuts and reductions to its MMO development work around the same time as the final-content announcement. PC Gamer reported on October 28, 2025, that Amazon Games was making significant role reductions at its Irvine and San Diego studios and central publishing team. The report reproduced a statement from Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president of audio, Twitch, and games, saying the company had decided to halt a significant amount of first-party AAA game development, specifically around MMOs. PC Gamer’s report did not disclose the number of Amazon Games employees affected.

The reported 14,000 job cuts were Amazon’s announced company-wide figure for 2025, not a count of New World staff or Amazon Games positions. Amazon’s official explanation for ending new content in New World was that continued support with new content was no longer sustainable. The layoffs and reduced MMO investment are relevant context, but the available statements do not establish that layoffs alone caused the game’s content cutoff.

What the announcement means for owners and prospective players

  • If you already own the game: Amazon says you can keep playing and reinstall it until January 31, 2027. The game is scheduled to become inaccessible after that date.
  • If you have not bought it: Amazon delisted it on January 15, 2026, so it is no longer available for purchase through the game’s official storefronts.
  • If you planned to spend in-game: Purchases of Marks of Fortune and other in-game items stopped on July 20, 2026.
  • If you expected future expansions or regular updates: Amazon has said there will be no further content releases. Continued bug and performance monitoring, world bosses, and bonus weeks are not new content development.
