Re:

New Car or Used Car: Which Is Better When New-Car Prices Rise?

A used car’s lower price is not automatically a better deal. Compare specific vehicles by full ownership cost, warranty, condition, financing and expected resale value.

Neither is automatically the better buy. Compare the full cost of owning a specific new car and a specific used car for as long as you expect to keep it—not just the sticker price or monthly payment. A recent used car may cost less and have already absorbed some early depreciation; a new car costs more up front but comes with newer features and full new-car warranty coverage. The right choice depends on the exact deal, financing, insurance, fuel, maintenance, repair risk and resale value.

What rising new-car prices change—and what they do not

Higher new-car prices can make used cars look like the obvious bargain, but an average price comparison cannot tell you whether a particular used car is better value than a particular new one. The vehicles may differ in size, equipment, mileage, condition and model. Compare candidates in the same vehicle category and estimate what each will cost you over your planned ownership period.

U.S. market figures illustrate the price gap, but they use different dates and definitions and should not be blended into a single comparison. Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive put average prices at about $50,080 for new cars and $25,721 for used cars in January 2026, in an affordability discussion (Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive). Edmunds transaction data reported by the Associated Press put the average new-vehicle transaction price at $48,899 and the price of a three-year-old used vehicle at $32,553 in June 2026 (Associated Press, reporting Edmunds data). Neither comparison describes matched versions of the same model, and neither is a local quote.

Those figures establish that used cars can have a lower average purchase price; they do not prove that buying used will save a specific household money. A low-priced older vehicle may need repairs, while a new-car incentive or favorable financing offer may narrow the difference. Only a full ownership-cost comparison can resolve the choice.

Compare the full cost of ownership

Start with the written out-the-door price, then add the costs and likely value changes over the period you plan to own the car. Include the cash you pay, financing, running costs and what you expect to recover when you sell or trade it. Use model-specific estimates where possible: broad averages are context, not a substitute for numbers tied to your candidates.

Factor New car Used car What to compare
Purchase price Usually higher, although eligible models may have incentives or manufacturer financing. Often lower; age, mileage, condition and supply affect the price. Written out-the-door price, including taxes, fees and optional add-ons.
Depreciation You bear the decline from the new-car purchase price. You may avoid part of the steepest early decline, but the car continues to depreciate. Expected model-specific resale value over your ownership period.
Warranty and condition Coverage terms are typically clearer; verify the exact warranty. May be sold as-is, with a limited warranty, or with remaining manufacturer coverage. Buyers Guide, warranty documents, coverage period, mileage limits and exclusions.
Reliability and satisfaction Consumer Reports says new cars generally score better. Depends on model, service history, mileage, condition and prior use. Model reliability information, service records, recall status and an independent inspection.
Financing Manufacturer incentives may be available to qualified buyers on eligible models. APR and terms may differ; a lower price does not guarantee cheaper financing. APR, amount financed, down payment, trade-in, loan term and total paid.
Running costs Insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration and repairs add to ownership cost. Older cars may require more repair spending; costs vary by model and condition. Insurance quotes and realistic maintenance and repair estimates.

A practical comparison is to estimate what you will pay over your ownership period, then account for the car’s expected resale value. For each candidate, gather the same categories: out-the-door price, financing cost, insurance, fuel, registration, maintenance and likely repairs. Subtract the estimated resale proceeds from the costs. This is not a guarantee—repair and resale estimates are uncertain—but it makes the assumptions visible and helps prevent a low sticker price from dominating the decision.

Use depreciation carefully

A new car’s resale value is uncertain, and an average projection is not a promise for an individual vehicle. Kelley Blue Book projected that an average 2026 model-year vehicle would retain about 45% of its value after five years. Its example estimates that a $50,000 new car would be worth close to $22,500 after five years (Kelley Blue Book, 2026 projection). Model, condition, mileage and market conditions can produce a different outcome.

For a used car, do not treat the depreciation already incurred by the previous owner as proof of a bargain. Estimate the car’s likely resale value at the end of your own ownership period, and account for its age and condition when you buy it. A three-year-old car is not automatically the best value: the June 2026 average transaction figure is broad market context, not evidence that every three-year-old model is priced well or has the same remaining life and coverage.

Account for financing and monthly cash flow separately

Compare financing offers using APR and total cost, not just the payment. A longer loan term can lower the monthly payment while increasing the total amount paid and the chance that you owe more than the car is worth. Compare the amount financed, down payment, trade-in, term and total paid for each candidate. A lower sticker price can still come with a less favorable APR or terms.

Keep the budget for ownership separate from the loan payment. Before deciding, get insurance quotes and estimate fuel, registration, routine maintenance and likely repairs. A payment that fits your monthly budget does not by itself show that the car is affordable over the full period you will own it.

When a new car may make more sense

A new car is worth considering when the specific model’s price and financing are manageable and you value newer features, clear warranty coverage and the reliability and satisfaction advantage reported for new cars. Consumer Reports’ comparison says new cars generally score better on reliability and owner satisfaction, but that general finding cannot establish the condition or likely reliability of one used vehicle (Consumer Reports’ new-versus-used comparison).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check whether incentives or manufacturer financing apply to the model and whether you qualify; compare the resulting total cost rather than assuming the advertised offer makes it cheaper.
  • Verify the exact warranty terms and what they cover instead of relying on the phrase “full warranty.”
  • Estimate depreciation using a model-specific resale value for your planned ownership period, rather than applying an average projection as if it were guaranteed.

New can be the more comfortable choice when you want a clear starting point for the car’s history and warranty, but those advantages have a price. Compare the value of that coverage and the features you actually want with the additional purchase and financing cost. Do not assume a new vehicle will always be cheaper to own simply because it is newer, or that every used car will be less reliable.

When a used car may make more sense

A used car may be the stronger choice if its lower purchase price remains a real saving after financing, insurance, maintenance and repair exposure are included. The vehicle’s history, condition and warranty matter as much as its age. A vehicle-history report can reveal information about a car’s past, but it does not diagnose mechanical problems and does not replace an independent inspection.

Certified pre-owned (CPO) can bridge new and used, but the label alone does not settle whether the premium is worthwhile. Kelley Blue Book estimated that CPO vehicles cost about 1.8% more than non-CPO used vehicles; Consumer Reports reported that estimate in an article updated June 22, 2026. Premiums vary by car and market, so compare the actual price difference with the CPO vehicle’s inspection and warranty terms (Consumer Reports, updated June 22, 2026). The FTC advises that an independent inspection matters even for a certified vehicle.

In other words, compare what the CPO premium buys on that particular car: the warranty terms, inspection process and any remaining manufacturer coverage. Read the documents rather than relying on the CPO label by itself. If a non-CPO car has a lower price but uncertain condition, include the independent inspection findings and repair estimates before deciding whether the difference is worth the risk.

How to evaluate a used car before buying

  1. Set the budget and requirements. Choose the vehicle type and intended use, then account for registration, insurance, fuel and maintenance as well as the purchase price.
  2. Get the out-the-door price in writing. Ask the dealer to itemize the price, taxes, fees and add-ons. Review any financing offer separately so you can see what the vehicle costs apart from the loan.
  3. Read the dealer’s Buyers Guide. It identifies whether the car is being sold as-is or with warranty coverage. Check the warranty documents for duration, mileage limits and exclusions, and get any negotiated changes or promises in writing.
  4. Check the history and recalls. Obtain a vehicle-history report and check whether the car has outstanding recalls. Treat the report as one source of information, not a mechanical assessment.
  5. Arrange an independent mechanical inspection. Use a mechanic independent of the seller, even for a CPO vehicle. Ask for a written inspection report and repair estimates so you can account for issues before agreeing to buy. The Federal Trade Commission explains that a history report typically will not identify mechanical problems and cannot replace an inspection (FTC: Buying a Used Car from a Dealer).
  6. Compare loan offers by APR and total cost. Look at the amount financed, down payment, trade-in, term and total paid—not only the monthly payment. Consider whether the term could leave you owing more than the vehicle is worth.

Do not treat the history report, a dealer’s description, or a consumer checklist as a substitute for the mechanic’s inspection. The report helps you research the vehicle’s past; the inspection is meant to assess its mechanical condition. If the inspection identifies work, use the written estimates to understand the repair exposure before you decide. Keep any seller promises or negotiated changes in writing, especially when the Buyers Guide says the vehicle is sold as-is or with limited coverage.

Make the decision with two candidate cars

Put a specific new car and a specific used car side by side. Use written prices and financing terms, insurance quotes, a realistic operating-cost estimate and model-specific resale estimates. For the used candidate, factor in the inspection findings and the actual warranty, if any. If either car’s repair exposure or resale value is uncertain, make that uncertainty visible in your budget rather than treating an optimistic estimate as certain.

The useful comparison is not simply “new costs more than used.” It is whether the new car’s higher purchase cost is justified by its warranty, features, financing and expected resale value—or whether the used car’s lower price remains worthwhile after its condition, maintenance and repair risks are included. A cheaper monthly payment alone cannot answer that question.

Should I buy a used car when new-car prices are high?

Possibly, if the used car’s lower price remains a real saving after its condition, financing, maintenance and repair risk are considered. Average market prices show broad context, not the value of a particular car or a local deal.

Is a three-year-old car worth it?

Age alone cannot answer that. Edmunds transaction data reported by AP put the average three-year-old used-vehicle price at $32,553 in June 2026, but that is not a matched comparison with a new version of the same model. Check the specific car’s price, mileage, history, condition, warranty and resale outlook.

The Bottom Line

Choose based on the full cost and risk of two specific cars, not the new-versus-used label or monthly payment.
