No $600 tariff rebate checks are approved or available to claim. H.R. 10494, the American Tariff Rebate Act, is a bill introduced in the House on September 17, 2026. It proposes a refundable tax credit—not a flat $600 check for everyone—with a $2,000 base amount for an eligible individual or $4,000 for a joint return, plus $600 per dependent. The bill has not established a payment date.

Is the $600 tariff rebate approved?

No. As of September 27, 2026, H.R. 10494 is introduced legislation, not a law or active benefit program. Representative Valerie Foushee introduced the American Tariff Rebate Act on September 17, and it was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means, as well as the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees. Until the proposal becomes law, it does not authorize a payment or create an application process.

How much would the proposed rebate be?

The proposal sets a refundable credit for tax year 2026: $2,000 for an eligible individual, or $4,000 for an eligible joint return, plus $600 for each qualifying dependent. The $600 figure is the dependent add-on, not the total benefit for every taxpayer or a universal per-person check.

The bill defines dependents by reference to Internal Revenue Code section 152. It also sets identification-number conditions for the taxpayer and dependents, with special provisions in the bill text; the amount is therefore subject to eligibility rules as well as income limits.

Who would qualify, and how do the income limits work?

Under the introduced text, the credit would phase down when adjusted gross income (AGI) exceeds the threshold for the filer’s status. The reduction is proportional across the specified phaseout interval and cannot reduce the credit below zero.

Filing status Proposed base credit Phaseout begins above AGI Phaseout interval Phaseout ends at AGI
Individual filer other than a joint filer or surviving spouse $2,000 $75,000 $5,000 $80,000
Head of household $2,000 $112,500 $7,500 $120,000
Joint filer or surviving spouse $4,000 $150,000 $10,000 $160,000

The table reflects the introduced bill text, not final rules. The bill’s eligibility definition excludes nonresident aliens, people who are dependents of another taxpayer, and estates or trusts. Amendments could change the proposal if it advances.

When would payments arrive?

There is no scheduled payment date. The bill proposes an advance refund based on eligibility for 2025 and directs Treasury to issue it as rapidly as possible, but bars an advance refund or credit after December 31, 2026. It also proposes a credit for the first taxable year beginning in 2026. Those provisions describe what the bill would do if enacted; they are not a confirmed timetable.

What tariff-cost figures has the sponsor cited?

In a September 18, 2026 press release, Representative Foushee’s office said the Joint Economic Committee Minority estimated that U.S. families paid more than $231 billion in tariff costs from February 2025 through January 2026, averaging about $1,745 per family. The release also said the committee projected costs could exceed $2,500 per family in 2026 if tariff levels held. These are figures attributed to the committee by the sponsor’s office; they are not amounts stated in H.R. 10494.

Foushee described the bill as a way to provide “swift, direct tax rebates” to offset tariff-related costs and rising everyday expenses. That is the sponsor’s rationale, not an established finding about the bill’s effect. The release is available from Representative Foushee’s office.
