Four documented examples of airlines that reached a launch milestone in 2024 are Fly91 in India, KM Malta Airlines, airHaifa in Israel, and Air Congo in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their dates mark different events—an inaugural flight, first flight, operating licence, or start of service—so there is no single like-for-like “launch date” across the group. This is a selection of sourced examples, not a complete worldwide census.
What counts as an airline’s launch?
“Launched” can describe a company being established, receiving an operating licence, making an inaugural or first flight, or beginning scheduled commercial service. Those milestones may fall on different dates. The examples below identify the specific event documented for each airline rather than treating every date as the same kind of start.
Which airlines launched in 2024?
Fly91: inaugural flight in March; scheduled service followed
India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation said Fly91’s inaugural flight was flagged off on 12 March 2024, operating between Manohar International Airport in Goa and Agatti. The ministry separately announced that scheduled flights would commence on 18 March, with routes phased in from Goa and between other regional cities. The two dates refer to different milestones, not conflicting launch dates. India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation announcement
KM Malta Airlines: first flight on 31 March
KM Malta Airlines says its first flight took place on 31 March 2024. The Maltese Civil Aviation Directorate had granted the airline’s certificate and licence on 1 December 2023. It was created as a new national carrier for Malta in an operational successor context; its launch should not be read as Malta having no prior national carrier. KM Malta Airlines’ announcement

Before service began, the airline announced a planned summer 2024 schedule covering 17 airports across 15 cities, with 8,546 planned flights and 1,430,000 planned seats. These were schedule and capacity figures announced in 2023, not realized passenger totals or proof that every planned flight operated. Summer 2024 schedule announcement
airHaifa: operating licence in September
airHaifa says it received its operational licence in September 2024 after completing procedures for commercial flight operations. The airline describes itself as the first new airline established in Israel in more than 30 years. Its launch is distinct from the earlier aircraft milestone: ATR reported in July 2024 that airHaifa had received its first ATR 72-600, with a second aircraft then scheduled for delivery in 2025. airHaifa’s account of its history ATR’s July 2024 announcement

The airline’s regional focus was tied to serving northern Israel from Haifa Airport. In its aircraft-delivery announcement, ATR described the intended market as approximately three million residents; that figure is ATR’s stated market context. ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude said the manufacturer’s regional-aircraft experience and support were valuable to startup airlines during their initial stages. That is a vendor’s perspective, offered in an announcement about airHaifa’s aircraft delivery, rather than an independent assessment of the airline’s prospects. ATR’s announcement
Air Congo: domestic operations began on 1 December
Air Congo’s corporate history says it was founded in 2024 and began operations on 1 December, initially flying domestically between Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. The airline reports that it is owned 51% by the Democratic Republic of the Congo government and 49% by Ethiopian Airlines. These details are from the carrier’s own account. What this list does—and does not—show
These four cases illustrate why lists of “new airlines” depend on the definition used. A company may be newly formed, take over a national-carrier role, obtain its licence before flying, or move from an inaugural flight to scheduled service on a later date. The cited accounts document four examples, but they do not establish a definitive worldwide list of every airline that began commercial operations in 2024.
