Cannes selected it for competition, alongside Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), prompting a conspicuous question about whether festival prestige and streaming-first distribution could coexist.
That clash was not a documented declaration of war. It was a dispute between two ways of releasing films: cinemas depend on a period of theatrical exclusivity, while Netflix built its service around watching on demand. The difference matters to filmmakers, exhibitors and viewers—and it helps explain why Netflix’s later studio commitments do not mean every Netflix film follows the same release pattern.

Why did Netflix and Cannes clash over Okja?
In 2016, Netflix announced that Bong Joon Ho’s Okja would premiere globally on its service in 2017 and “will also have a limited day and date theatrical release in the US.” The statement described the planned U.S. release; it did not establish a release arrangement for every territory or for Netflix films generally.
In April 2017, Cannes announced that Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) had been selected for competition. Netflix said both films would launch on its service globally that year. Ted Sarandos described Cannes as “a prestigious forum” for the films’ premieres. The pairing made the disagreement visible: a film could be presented in a major theatrical festival setting even though its planned public availability included streaming at the same time.

The episode raised a question for festivals and exhibitors, not a universal answer about what counts as cinema. Festival selection, public distribution, and theatrical exclusivity are different things. The available announcements establish the selection and Netflix’s release plan; they do not establish a general Cannes rule or a lasting policy for all festivals.
What is the difference between a cinema window and streaming-first release?
A theatrical window is the period when a film is available in cinemas before reaching another distribution channel such as subscription streaming. That interval gives theaters a period of exclusive access to the film. A day-and-date release removes that exclusivity for the relevant markets by making the film available in cinemas and on a streaming service at the same time. Streaming-first availability gives viewers access through the service before, or instead of, a conventional exclusive cinema run.
These models embody different expectations about how people watch. The cinema model asks viewers to choose a screening, go to a venue and share a scheduled experience with an audience. Streaming emphasizes convenience: viewers can choose when and where to watch, subject to the service and title being available to them. For a cinema, a period of exclusivity can help make a release an event and distinguish the theater from home viewing. For a streaming service, broad on-demand access is central to its offer.

| Release model | What viewers can expect | What it means for cinemas |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive theatrical window | The film is in cinemas before it becomes available through later distribution channels. The length of the window varies. | Cinemas have a period of exclusive access to the release. |
| Day-and-date | The film is available in cinemas and on a streaming service at the same time in the specified market. | The cinema release competes with immediate home access rather than having an exclusive period. |
| Streaming-first or streaming-only | Viewers can watch through the streaming service first, or the film may not receive a conventional cinema release. | A theatrical run is not the first or exclusive route to the audience. |
There is no single release pattern for every Netflix film. A Netflix original, a studio film licensed to Netflix after its other runs, and a film from a studio Netflix proposed to acquire are distinct cases. The title’s route to Netflix—and the timing of that route—matters as much as the platform where viewers eventually find it.

The streaming-first argument was part of a broader promise of viewer control. In a 2017 retrospective on House of Cards, Netflix highlighted that it released all episodes of the series at once in 2013. Cindy Holland, then Netflix’s Vice President of Original Content, put the idea this way: “For years our lives had to fit around television, now it’s the other way around.”
That example concerned a television series, not a film-release policy. It nevertheless captures the consumer logic behind Netflix’s model: replace a fixed schedule with on-demand choice. For movies, the corresponding tension is whether viewers should wait for a scheduled cinema outing or have access at home on the service’s timetable.

Does Netflix still release movies in theaters?
Netflix’s later arrangements show why the answer depends on what kind of film and deal is being discussed. A Netflix original release is not the same as a licensed film arriving after a studio has completed its theatrical and home-entertainment runs.
Netflix’s proposed Warner Bros. acquisition
In December 2025, Netflix co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos said in a communication hosted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that theatrical distribution had not been a priority because it had not been part of Netflix’s business. They also said Netflix would preserve Warner Bros. theatrical releases if the proposed acquisition closed. Netflix separately announced that Warner Bros. films would receive theatrical releases with industry-standard windows.

Those were statements about a proposed transaction and future intentions, not evidence that the deal closed or that the promised policy was implemented. The December 2025 materials establish the agreement and announced commitments; they do not establish the transaction’s closing date, regulatory outcome or Warner Bros.’ actual distribution policy as of October 8, 2026.

The Sony licensing agreement
A January 2026 Netflix-Sony announcement described a multi-year agreement under which Sony feature films would reach Netflix after their full theatrical and home-entertainment runs. Netflix said availability would roll out gradually across territories beginning later in 2026, with full global availability planned for early 2029. Those dates are the announced rollout plan, not confirmation that each stage has since been completed.
This is a licensing arrangement: Sony films follow their earlier distribution runs before becoming available on Netflix. It is not evidence that Netflix adopted the same theatrical strategy for its own original releases. It does show that Netflix streaming and theatrical distribution can be successive parts of one film’s distribution path rather than mutually exclusive choices.

The traditional window has changed over time, and release timing is not uniform across films. Associated Press reporting in December 2025 described a shift from a historical 90-day norm toward roughly 45 days, while noting that contemporary windows vary film by film. Those figures are contextual reporting from that date, not a universal rule or a guarantee for any particular release.

A film’s window depends on its distribution arrangement and the decisions made for that title. So neither “Netflix movies go straight to streaming” nor “studio films always have a fixed cinema period” is an accurate general rule. The Okja plan, Sony’s post-run licensing deal, and Netflix’s conditional Warner Bros. commitments illustrate different arrangements, not one standard policy.
What did the “war on Hollywood” really mean?
The phrase is best understood as a metaphor for an industrial dispute over release order, exclusivity and control of the audience relationship. Theaters have a business interest in exclusive runs; Netflix’s early model made on-demand availability its defining advantage. Okja brought those interests into a high-profile festival setting, while later studio and licensing arrangements showed that streaming could also follow theatrical exhibition.
The evidence does not show that Netflix alone caused changes in cinema attendance, nor that it formally campaigned against Hollywood. It shows a company whose historical priorities differed from theatrical distributors, an early flashpoint over simultaneous access, and later agreements and proposals that require careful distinction between announced plans and completed practice.
