How many jobs could 5% mean?
Variety reported that Netflix had about 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025. Applying the reported 5% figure to that approximate total gives about 800 positions. The calculation is a rough indication of scale, not a verified number of layoffs; the actual workforce may have changed since year-end 2025, and neither the percentage nor the resulting count has been confirmed by Netflix. Variety also reported that about 10,900 employees—roughly 68% of the workforce—were in the U.S. and Canada in December 2025. The earnings date is confirmed; a layoff announcement on or before that date is not. The report’s suggested timing and the scheduled results should not be treated as evidence that the two events are connected.
What Netflix’s latest financial figures do—and do not—show
In its Q2 2026 shareholder letter, Netflix reported revenue of $12.6 billion, up 13% year over year. It forecast Q3 revenue growth of 12% and an operating margin of 33.2%. These are company-reported Q2 results and Q3 forecasts, respectively—not evidence that the reported workforce plan was caused by financial weakness or a cost-saving target. Variety also quoted co-CEO Ted Sarandos at a September 2026 conference saying, “Yes, overall, we’re not growing as fast as I want us to, and we’re working on making that move faster.” The remark concerned growth; it does not state a reason for the reported layoffs.
