It did not say that it laid off the entire development team: the company said the game’s core team remained in Guangzhou. The sources reporting the decision do not establish how many people were affected or the team’s later staffing status.
What happened?
On February 18, 2025, Marvel Rivals director Thaddeus Sasser said publicly that his team had been laid off after helping deliver the game. GameSpot quoted him describing the team as having helped create a successful new franchise, then reporting that they had lost their jobs. GameSpot reported Sasser’s post and NetEase’s comment.
NetEase confirmed a reduction in a Seattle-based design team that supported the game as part of a larger global design function. Its explanation was that it had adjusted the team structure “for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game,” as reported by Game Developer.
Was the whole Marvel Rivals team laid off?
No. NetEase described a reduction in the Seattle design group, not the dismissal of every person working on Marvel Rivals. The company said the core development team was based in Guangzhou and named Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen as its leaders. GeekWire reported the distinction between the Seattle team and the Guangzhou core team.

This difference in scope matters when interpreting Sasser’s post and headlines describing a team being laid off. His post conveyed what happened to his team; NetEase’s statement specified that the confirmed organizational change involved a Seattle design team within a broader global function. The available reports do not establish the precise number or roles of everyone affected.
What reason did NetEase give?
NetEase said the change was made for organizational reasons and to improve development efficiency. That is the company’s stated rationale, not independent evidence of a particular financial motive or other cause. The reporting does not establish why the company chose this specific team structure.

What did NetEase say about the game’s future?
At the time, NetEase said it would continue investing in Marvel Rivals and deliver additional characters, maps, features, and other content. That statement describes the company’s position in February 2025; it does not verify current investment levels or staffing.
The staffing news drew attention partly because Marvel Rivals had launched as a free-to-play action game for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, featuring short 5v5 team battles, according to GeekWire’s contemporaneous coverage. The game’s popularity or format does not, by itself, establish a cause for the staffing decision.
