NetApp agreed to buy Akorri Networks in January 2011 to add performance and capacity analytics for virtualized, shared IT environments. The agreement was announced January 12, the transaction closed on January 31, and NetApp publicly announced completion on February 1. NetApp described the all-cash deal as approximately $60 million; its fiscal 2011 filing recorded a $62.3 million purchase price, including $7.9 million held in escrow.
What NetApp acquired
Akorri was a privately held data-center management software company. Its flagship BalancePoint software analyzed performance and capacity across virtualized infrastructure, helping organizations identify bottlenecks and plan storage more effectively.
NetApp said the technology extended its OnCommand management portfolio with visibility across applications, servers, networks and storage. In the completion announcement, NetApp also described BalancePoint as complementary to its SANscreen software. Those descriptions are NetApp’s 2011 portfolio claims, rather than an independent assessment of product performance.

Why capacity planning mattered
Virtualization allows applications and workloads to share servers, networks and storage, but that consolidation can make it harder to see which layer is causing a slowdown or where capacity is being consumed. BalancePoint was intended to connect those layers so administrators could trace performance bottlenecks and make better-informed storage capacity decisions.

NetApp executive vice president of Product Operations Manish Goel summarized the problem at the time: “The ability to accurately predict and manage performance and capacity requirements has been a common obstacle for many customers wanting to transition to a virtualized environment.” NetApp’s January 2011 release
How Akorri fit NetApp’s management portfolio
| Management layer | Role described in 2011 sources |
|---|---|
| Akorri BalancePoint | Performance and capacity analytics for virtualized, shared infrastructure; bottleneck identification and storage planning. |
| OnCommand | NetApp’s broader management software suite, which NetApp said was extended by Akorri’s cross-stack analytics. |
| SANscreen | An existing NetApp management product that NetApp said BalancePoint complemented. |
The strategic logic was therefore less about adding another storage device and more about improving management visibility across the IT stack. NetApp could present a combined view of applications, compute, networking and storage instead of treating storage capacity as an isolated measurement.
