NEPRA’s 62-Paisa Power Tariff Cut for 2026: What It Means for Bills and Rates

NEPRA’s Rs0.62 reduction applies to the 2026 national average base tariff—not automatically to each consumer’s rate or electricity bill.

NEPRA set Pakistan’s national average base tariff for calendar year 2026 at Rs33.38 per kWh, down Rs0.62 from Rs34. The reduction is an average, not a guaranteed 62-paisa-per-unit discount on every household bill: reporting on the government’s motion says end-consumer tariffs for distribution companies and K-Electric were kept unchanged for 2026.

What the 62-paisa reduction actually measures

The Rs0.62 difference compares the previous national average base tariff of Rs34 per kWh with the Rs33.38 average determined for calendar year 2026. Dawn and The Express Tribune reported the figures in 2026. Dawn and The Express Tribune

This is a system-wide average, not the rate assigned to every customer category, household slab, or electricity bill. A tariff determination by NEPRA and the end-consumer tariff applicable after government action are distinct steps. Reporting on the government’s motion said consumer tariffs for DISCOs and K-Electric were maintained unchanged for 2026; consequently, the average reduction does not establish an individual customer’s per-unit saving.

Why NEPRA lowered the average

Dawn reported that the 2026 revenue requirement for ex-WAPDA distribution companies (DISCOs) was Rs142 billion lower than for FY2025–26, mainly because of a lower power purchase price. That reduction in the revenue requirement informed the average tariff determination; it does not mean each customer receives a matching reduction on their bill.

Why a bill can change even when the tariff is described as unchanged

The annual rebasing is separate from monthly fuel-cost adjustments and quarterly tariff adjustments. Those mechanisms can affect bills at other times, so the January 2026 average determination alone cannot show what a customer will pay in a later month. NEPRA’s official website lists tariff decisions and adjustment proceedings, including fuel-cost and quarterly adjustment matters: NEPRA.

A bill also reflects the customer’s applicable category and usage, along with any other charges or adjustments that apply. The per-unit average base tariff should not be treated as the final amount payable or used by itself to calculate a household’s bill.

What the ruling said about subsidized consumers

Dawn reproduced NEPRA’s explanation that the average reduction had been offset by changes in the sales mix as the number of subsidized consumers grew. The report cited 9.5 million subsidized consumers in FY2022 and 20.71 million as of June 2025, attributing both figures to NEPRA’s determination. These are counts of subsidized consumers at those stated dates, not estimates of an individual customer’s savings.

Can you use the 62-paisa figure to estimate your bill?

No. It is not evidence that a household’s bill should fall by Rs0.62 for every unit used. The reported unchanged end-consumer tariffs, category-specific rates, and separate monthly and quarterly adjustments all matter. A reliable personal calculation requires the current tariff schedule and adjustments applicable to the particular connection and billing period; the cited reporting does not provide a complete household slab schedule current to October 8, 2026.
