What is planned to continue at NorthPark?
The Houston Chronicle reported that Neiman Marcus plans to bring four named downtown-store elements to its NorthPark location. These are announced plans and schedules, not confirmation that every move or opening has been completed.
- The Zodiac Room: Planned for the space formerly occupied by NM Café, with turquoise walls, plush banquets, and distinctive art. Reported menu favorites include chicken broth, popovers with strawberry butter, Stanley Marcus pot roast, and mandarin orange soufflé, alongside new dishes. The company described the downtown store’s “spirit of innovation, exceptional service and deep customer relationships” as something that will continue to guide it. That is the company’s framing of its legacy, not evidence that the former store experience will survive unchanged. Houston Chronicle report
What happens to the downtown building?
Current reporting does not establish a decided future use for 1618 Main Street. D Magazine reported that the Dallas Landmark Commission began a process to designate the building a city landmark in August 2026, but that is not the same as a completed designation. Its September 30 timeline said no future-use plan had been revealed; the later closure report described the NorthPark plans but supplied no redevelopment decision. The building’s history is distinct from the company’s founding date. Neiman Marcus began in Dallas in 1907, while its Main Street store opened in 1914 after the original store burned in 1913. The downtown location was therefore more than a century old, but the Main Street building was not the same age as the company. Houston Chronicle closure report
A 2019 account by the Downtown Dallas Parks Conservancy describes the building’s Renaissance Revival character, white terra-cotta exterior, double staircase, and many expansions. It also recounts a 1964 fire and a later expansion that added two floors in 1983, bringing the complex to nine stories. What survives beyond the store?
Neiman Marcus’s legacy also includes traditions and institutions that are not tied to the Main Street address. The company says Carrie Marcus Neiman and Stanley Marcus established the Neiman Marcus Awards in 1938 to recognize people who changed fashion, and that more than 150 luminaries have been honored. Its history page names Daniel Roseberry and Maria Grazia Chiuri as the 2024 recipients. These are company-reported details about the awards program, separate from the NorthPark carryovers. The company’s Dallas presence extends beyond retail, too: a 2022 City of Dallas announcement said Neiman Marcus would keep its headquarters in Dallas and use renovated space at Cityplace Tower.
