Plans for an Aldi-led redevelopment of the former Captain Stirling Centre site at 90 Stirling Highway, Nedlands, were approved by the Metro Inner Development Assessment Panel on 11 February 2025. That is a planning decision, not confirmation that construction has started or that the store has an opening date.
What was approved
The City of Nedlands’ development register lists the Development Assessment Panel application for 90 Stirling Highway as a commercial development and records it as approved. The state planning record also says the Metro Inner DAP resolved to approve the ALDI commercial development on 11 February 2025. The application reference is DAP/24/02769. (City of Nedlands register; WA Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage record)
The City describes Development Assessment Panels as independent decision-making bodies that determine certain applications in place of the original decision maker. The approval therefore establishes the panel’s planning decision; it does not, by itself, establish that all project conditions have been satisfied or that building work is under way.
What the redevelopment is reported to include
PerthNow reported the project as a $12 million redevelopment of the former Captain Stirling Centre site. That cost is a media-reported figure, not an independently verified project estimate. The reported proposal includes:
#1 Best Overall
- LARGE CAPACITY&FOLDABLE: Extra-large grocery shopping bags can contain up to 35 liters; each reusable shopping bag measures 16.1" x 10.2" x 13" ; when the tote bag is not in use, it folds flat for easy storage in cabinets, trunks, baggage, etc
- STURDY: high-quality, waterproof, thick non-woven fabric ensures that the bag body is sturdy while the X-shaped handle design makes the bags easy to hold without ripping
- MULTIFUNCTIONAL: The large-capacity and multi-purpose tote bag is suitable for a variety of places, such as shopping malls, supermarkets, gyms, libraries and camping sites; to go outdoors or travel, keep a convenient bag handy for emergencies
- EASY TO CLEAN: The tote bags with a waterproof layer are not easily soiled by dirt or stains on the surface; simply wipe it clean with a wet rag, wet paper towel, or disinfectant and let it dry naturally
- REUSABLE: Convenient reusable grocery bags are the primary choice as an alternative to disposable conventional plastic bags; whether it is for your own convenience and the protection of the planet, reusable bags are a win-win choice
- An Aldi supermarket
- A rear laneway
- Semi-basement car parking
- Six smaller commercial tenancy spaces
PerthNow also reported that Aldi bought the site in 2015. Its account says demolition approval followed in 2018, but the site was not cleared until late 2023. The news report described the property’s preceding period of limbo as almost 10 years; that is its characterization, not a formal project-duration measure. (PerthNow, 12 February 2025)
Approval is not a construction or opening date
The decision confirms planning approval, but the City register, state planning record and PerthNow coverage cited here do not confirm that construction has started or give an Aldi opening date. A reader asking when the Nedlands store will open should treat the timing as unconfirmed, rather than infer a date from the panel decision.

- --Set of 2-
- Gigantic tote
- 100 % polypropylene,
- Easy to clean; just Rinse with water and let dry.
- Volume: 19 gallon. Lightweight, generously oversized, foldable,
The approval was subject to conditions. PerthNow reported that Aldi would have to agree to or potentially contest them; the available reporting does not establish that every condition has since been resolved. The 10 February 2025 PerthNow story said the proposal was recommended for approval subject to conditions ahead of the panel meeting, but the final decision is recorded in the City and state planning sources. (PerthNow, 10 February 2025)
Why the headline calls it the first western-suburbs Aldi
PerthNow framed the proposal as the first Aldi in Perth’s western suburbs. That wording is the news report’s description; the planning records confirm approval of the Nedlands commercial development, not an independently audited history of Aldi stores across the western suburbs.
