News reports say passengers carried about $692 million in cash in luggage on departing flights from Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP) in 2024 and 2025—roughly $1 million a day. The figures are attributed to federal officials and TSA-related records, but the sources available do not include a public TSA dataset independently confirming the totals or explaining exactly what was counted. Carrying large amounts of cash is not, by itself, illegal or proof of a crime.
What the reported MSP figures say
Just the News reported that $342.37 million in cash was carried in luggage on departing passengers at MSP in 2024 and $349.4 million in 2025. Together, that is $691.77 million—close to $700 million, or an average of about $949,000 per day across the two calendar years.
The outlet attributed the figures to federal officials and TSA-related records. That attribution is not the same as a publicly accessible, independently verified TSA statistical release. The available reporting also does not establish a complete definition of what counted as “flagged” cash, such as whether the figures reflect visual observations, recorded amounts, referrals, or another category. Treat the totals as reported figures, not as an audited government statistic.
What congressional and state attention establishes
On January 14, 2026, Senator Chuck Grassley sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and TSA referring to the public reporting and asking the agencies questions. The letter documents congressional scrutiny; it does not independently verify the reported amounts or establish the source or destination of the money. Read the letter.

Is it illegal to carry more than $10,000 out of the United States?
No. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says transporting any amount of currency is legal. The separate requirement is that a traveler carrying more than $10,000 in covered currency or monetary instruments into or out of the United States must report it to CBP using FinCEN Form 105. The threshold triggers a reporting obligation; it is not a limit on how much a traveler may carry.

The covered items include currency and specified negotiable or bearer instruments. CBP says travelers may file electronically and may complete the form before departure. Consult CBP’s current guidance on international money transfers for the applicable instructions. A large transfer, a required report, or scrutiny at an airport does not by itself show that the money is criminal proceeds.
