Yes, nearly $460,000 is plausible as an annualized figure for a senior American Airlines captain—but it is not a typical salary for every pilot. The number depends on the pilot’s seat, aircraft, pay step, credited hours and which benefits are counted. One 2026 estimate reaches about $446,525 by applying a senior widebody captain’s hourly rate to an assumed 80 credited hours per month; that is a calculation, not a payroll record.
Where the nearly $460,000 figure comes from
The Air Gazette’s 2026 comparison lists a year-12 widebody captain rate of $465.13 per credited hour. At 80 credited hours a month for 12 months, the arithmetic is $446,524.80, or about $446,525 a year. The estimate is close to $460,000, but it describes an annualized model based on a particular rate and monthly credit assumption—not a verified account of what a pilot actually earned. Credited hours are not the same as simply counting hours spent at work, and an assumed monthly total may not match an individual pilot’s schedule or pay. A different seat, aircraft category, service step or amount of credited time changes the result. The available figures do not establish an average or median American pilot’s actual 2025–2026 earnings.
Why the 2023 figures were higher
During negotiations in March 2023, American CEO Robert Isom projected about $475,000 for a top-scale 737 captain and $590,000 for a senior 777 captain. The figures included salary and retirement-plan contributions. They were proposal-era projections for particular senior captains, not a promise of salary at those levels for every pilot. The agreement was later ratified by roughly 15,000 American pilots, according to the company. American said the four-year agreement was worth more than $9 billion in compensation and quality-of-life benefits across the pilot group. The Allied Pilots Association said the contract represented more than 46% growth in total compensation value over four years, including scheduled raises and increased retirement contributions, as reported by the Associated Press. What determines an American pilot’s pay?
Seat and aircraft
Captains and first officers have different pay rates, and rates also vary by aircraft category. A senior widebody captain’s rate cannot be applied to a first officer or to every aircraft. AirlineContract.com’s 2026 summary lists $507.90 per credit hour at the top of its summarized A380 captain scale and says its pay table covers rates through January 1, 2026. Years of service and pay step
A pilot’s rate depends on where they fall on the applicable pay scale. The year-12 rate used in the $446,525 illustration is not an entry-level rate, nor does it describe every captain. A pilot’s position and equipment assignment matter alongside seniority on the pay scale.

Credited hours
Annualizing an hourly rate requires an hours assumption. At the same $465.13 rate, fewer or more than 80 credited hours in a month would produce a different modeled annual figure. The 80-hour assumption belongs to the Air Gazette calculation; it should not be mistaken for a guaranteed monthly workload or a universal pay formula.
Salary versus total compensation
Base pay is only one component that may appear in a compensation figure. Employer retirement contributions, bonuses, per diem and other items are distinct; whether they are included depends on how a source defines its total. The 2023 projections explicitly included salary and retirement contributions, while the $446,525 2026 illustration is an hourly-rate annualization. Those figures therefore do not measure exactly the same thing.
