One Philadelphia-origin flight flew as far as Spain before turning back after nearly 15 hours in the air, the Associated Press reported. It was one striking example—not the duration of every return flight—of disruption after military strikes on Iran and regional airspace closures on February 28, 2026.
Why flights were diverted or turned back
On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel carried out military strikes targeting sites in Iran, and Iran retaliated, according to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). EASA described high risks in Iranian airspace and neighboring areas affected by hostilities or military activity, including interceptions.
The disruption reached beyond flights bound for the region. Closures and restrictions affected multiple countries’ airspace, while key hubs in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha shut down, according to the Associated Press (AP). When a flight’s planned route or destination becomes unsafe or unavailable, operators may divert to another airport or return to the origin; the outcome depends on the aircraft’s position, available routes and airports, and the airline’s operational decisions.
What EASA’s historical bulletin said
EASA’s bulletin listed Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia among affected airspaces. For that period, it recommended not operating at any altitude in Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. For Bahrain, Kuwait, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Oman, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, it advised caution and contingency planning. The bulletin has since been withdrawn, so these statements describe historical guidance, not current flight-safety advice.

What is known about the nearly 15-hour return
AP reported that at least 145 aircraft en route to Tel Aviv and Dubai diverted to airports including Athens, Istanbul and Rome, citing FlightAware. Other aircraft returned to their departure airports. One flight that left Philadelphia reached Spain and then returned after nearly 15 hours airborne.
The AP passage does not identify that aircraft’s airline or flight number. It also does not establish that other returning flights spent a similar amount of time in the air. The headline phrase “14 hours to nowhere” captures the ordeal, but the documented duration for this specific flight is nearly 15 hours—not an exact 14-hour measurement.

How widespread was the disruption?
AP reported on February 28, 2026, that major Middle Eastern airlines had cancelled more than 1,800 flights and that hundreds of thousands of travelers were stranded or diverted. Those were contemporaneous figures, not a final tally for the full disruption. AP also reported, citing aviation analytics firm Cirium, that the Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi hubs typically handle about 90,000 passengers per day combined. That is a normal daily passenger flow, not a count of people affected by the closures.
The available reporting does not provide a verified complete count of flights that turned back. Diversions, cancellations and returns are different outcomes, and none of the reported figures should be read as a final total for the entire episode.

What airlines told affected passengers
Qatar Airways
On February 28, Qatar Airways said it had temporarily suspended flights to and from Doha because Qatari airspace had closed. The airline said it was working with government stakeholders and relevant authorities to support affected passengers, adding ground staff at Hamad International Airport and other key airports, and expecting delays when regular operations resumed. It said: “The safety of our passengers and crew is always our highest priority, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Waivers and other carrier policies
AP reported that airlines issued waivers allowing some affected travelers to rebook without extra fees or higher fares. Qantas also published a policy for specified destinations and travel dates. These examples do not establish a universal right to a free change, refund or other compensation; eligibility depended on the airline, itinerary, ticket and applicable policy.

What to do if your flight is affected
- Check your airline’s flight status and notices. Use the carrier’s current updates for your specific flight rather than relying on a general report about airport or regional closures.
- Read the waiver terms for your booking. Check covered travel dates, destinations, deadlines, change fees and whether any fare difference applies. A waiver for one airline or itinerary may not apply to another.
- Contact the airline before making a separate booking. Ask what options apply to your ticket and whether the carrier is arranging a reroute, rebooking or other assistance. Keep records of the airline’s notices and any expenses you incur.
- Check your ticket and contract terms for refund options. The reporting cited here does not establish a universal refund entitlement. Whether a refund is available depends on the booking terms and rules that apply to your situation.
Aviation analyst Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research Group, told AP: “For travelers, there’s no way to sugarcoat this,” reflecting the uncertainty passengers faced at the time. Mike McCormick, a former FAA air traffic control official and professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, said on February 28 that how airspace would be used over the next 24 to 36 hours depended on how military activity and the risks developed. That was a contemporaneous assessment, not a current forecast.
