NBFC Shares: What AUM Growth, Price Targets and Quarterly Results Can Tell You

AUM growth and quarterly results reveal parts of an NBFC’s performance, not whether its share is attractive. Learn how to assess growth quality, compare lenders and interpret dated analyst targets.

AUM growth and quarterly results can show whether an NBFC is expanding its lending and turning that activity into earnings. Neither growth nor an analyst price target, on its own, tells you whether the share is attractive. To judge the business, read those signals alongside asset quality, credit costs, funding, capital, profitability and valuation—and compare companies with the same business model and reporting period.

What does AUM growth tell you about an NBFC?

Assets under management (AUM) is a measure of the loans or other assets a lender manages, subject to the company’s stated definition. Rising AUM can indicate that lending activity is expanding. It does not show by itself whether the new lending is profitable, well-underwritten or being repaid on time.

Check the company’s own disclosure for the AUM reporting date, units, business scope and comparison basis. Look at portfolio mix and disbursements as well as the headline growth rate: a faster-growing loan book may reflect a shift between products or borrower groups, not simply more lending on unchanged terms.

Sector credit deployment and a company’s AUM are related but different measures. For example, a Reserve Bank of India sectoral deployment release for July 2026 reported year-over-year NBFC credit growth of 14.9%, versus 10.6% a year earlier. The reporting sample covered upper- and middle-layer NBFCs and housing finance companies, and represented approximately 87% of credit measured against the release’s stated benchmark. It is a sample-based sector credit statistic, not an AUM growth rate for every listed NBFC. The figures were reported in an RBI release dated September 7, 2026, reproduced by Track RBI.

How should you interpret current NBFC growth figures?

Always attach a growth number to its segment, period and measure. Sector or segment figures can provide context, but they cannot substitute for the issuer’s own results.

Measure Reported figure Scope and qualification
NBFC credit growth 14.9% year over year in July 2026; 10.6% in the year-earlier comparison RBI-reported sectoral deployment for a sample of upper- and middle-layer NBFCs and housing finance companies, approximately 87% of credit measured against the release’s benchmark. Release dated September 7, 2026, reproduced by Track RBI.
NBFC-MFI AUM Around ₹1.44 lakh crore in June 2026, about 5% higher year over year ICRA’s figure for the NBFC-microfinance segment, not the whole NBFC sector; reported in its September 30, 2026 update.
NBFC-MFI AUM growth outlook 20–25% for FY2027 ICRA forecast, not a realized result. Applies to NBFC-MFIs, not all NBFCs.

The contrast between the 5% NBFC-MFI AUM growth reported for June 2026 and ICRA’s 20–25% FY2027 forecast is not a contradiction: one is a historical year-over-year observation and the other is a projection for a later financial year. A forecast is conditional, not a result or assurance.

What should you check in quarterly results?

A quarterly result is a dated snapshot. Before comparing numbers, identify whether they are standalone or consolidated, audited or unaudited, and quarter-on-quarter or year-on-year. Read the explanatory notes and regulatory disclosures, not just the headline figures: accounting treatment, reporting scope and the NBFC’s applicable category can affect interpretation.

Then assess whether growth is producing sustainable returns. A useful review brings together the following measures rather than treating loan-book expansion as the verdict:

  • Asset quality and credit costs: Review delinquencies, non-performing assets, provisions and recoveries. Check the issuer’s definitions and whether the trend is improving or deteriorating.
  • Profitability: Consider net interest margin, operating expenses, credit costs, return on assets and return on equity. A larger book need not yield stronger profit if funding, operating or credit costs rise.
  • Funding and liquidity: Examine borrowing costs and sources, liquidity disclosures and the asset-liability maturity profile.
  • Capital and regulation: Check capital adequacy and the company’s RBI layer or category against current disclosures.
  • Concentration and portfolio mix: Look for exposure to particular products, borrower groups or other concentrations that may shape the risk behind reported growth.

For instance, an NSE-filed NBFC result for the quarter ended December 31, 2025 marked the figures unaudited and included review and approval steps, the accounting basis and regulatory disclosures. Those details illustrate why a result table should be read with its notes; the filing is an example, not a current result for every NBFC.

Why does the type of NBFC matter?

“NBFC” covers different lending models, so two lenders’ growth and risk figures may not be directly comparable. Establish what the company actually lends for and to whom before comparing performance. RBI materials distinguish categories and their defining criteria.

  • Microfinance lenders: Assess the borrower segment and the specific NBFC-MFI context; segment growth figures should not be generalized to other lenders.
  • Housing finance companies: Consider housing-loan exposures and the company’s own reporting scope.
  • Vehicle financiers and gold-loan lenders: Compare companies within the relevant lending activity, using their disclosed portfolio and risk measures.
  • Infrastructure or other wholesale lenders: Examine the nature and concentration of larger exposures rather than assuming a retail-lending risk profile.

These are broad examples, not a substitute for checking the RBI classification and the issuer’s current disclosures. Retail versus wholesale, secured versus unsecured, and product mix can all change what a reported AUM increase means.

How do you compare two NBFC shares fairly?

Use the same reporting periods and comparable definitions. A side-by-side review is more useful when it compares both scale and the quality, cost and risk of growth.

  1. Identify each business: Record its NBFC category, borrower segment, product mix, and retail or wholesale and secured or unsecured exposures.
  2. Match the periods and definitions: Compare AUM and disbursements at the same dates and on the same year-over-year or quarter-over-quarter basis. Note whether the figures are standalone or consolidated.
  3. Test growth quality: Put AUM and disbursement trends beside asset-quality measures, provisions, recoveries and credit costs.
  4. Compare returns and costs: Review net interest margin, operating expenses, return on assets and return on equity alongside funding costs.
  5. Check financial resilience: Compare borrowing diversity, liquidity and asset-liability maturity disclosures, capital adequacy and portfolio concentrations.
  6. Assess valuation on disclosed assumptions: Consider an appropriate valuation measure, such as price-to-book where relevant, in light of the company’s growth and return profile. Do not treat a low or high multiple as a verdict without that context.
  7. Verify the source material: Use the issuer’s latest exchange filing, investor presentation and earnings-call transcript to reconcile reported figures with management commentary.

Company materials are available from issuer investor-relations pages; for example, Fedbank Financial Services lists June 2026 quarterly results, investor presentations, annual reports and earnings-call transcripts. Use the latest materials for the company you are assessing rather than assuming that one issuer’s disclosure represents the sector.

What do analyst price targets tell you?

A price target is an analyst or research house’s estimate based on assumptions and a stated horizon. It is not a promised share price, a guaranteed outcome or a single target for the NBFC sector. Targets can change as results, market prices and assumptions change.

Before using a target, verify the company, analyst or research house, report date, share-price reference date, target horizon, valuation method and key assumptions. Compare those assumptions with the company’s reported growth, asset quality, funding, capital and returns. A target without this context is difficult to interpret, and a target for one lender should not be applied to another with a different business model.

No representative, comparable set of current issuer-level targets is established here because the topic does not name companies or an analyst universe. Accordingly, there is no defensible sector-wide target to report. If you encounter a target, treat it as a dated estimate for that named issuer and review the underlying report.

Where should you verify NBFC numbers?

For sector credit series and regulatory categories, consult the relevant RBI material. For company performance, start with the issuer’s latest exchange filing, then use its investor presentation and earnings-call transcript to understand definitions and management commentary. Preserve each number’s reporting date, units, business scope and comparison basis when making your own comparison.

Quarterly filings may be unaudited and may include review status, accounting policies and regulatory notes that affect how the tables should be read. Check those disclosures for the specific filing rather than assuming all NBFC results use the same scope or basis.
