Start with AZ-900 only if you need cloud fundamentals, then branch into administration, architecture, DevOps, data, AI, or security. Match any exam purchase to a current Microsoft credential, a hands-on project, and a realistic budget.
Choose a role before choosing an exam
Use this decision map instead of a one-size-fits-all ladder. AZ-900 is optional for experienced practitioners, and AZ-305 and AZ-400 serve different careers.

| Target work | Typical route | What you should be able to demonstrate |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud or infrastructure administration | AZ-900 (optional) → AZ-104 | Identity, compute, storage, networking, governance, monitoring and cost controls |
| Solutions architecture | AZ-104 → AZ-305 | Complete designs balancing reliability, security, performance, continuity and cost |
| DevOps or platform engineering | AZ-104 or a current developer route → AZ-400 | Source control, CI/CD, security, compliance and operational feedback |
| Data | DP-900 (optional) → a current data specialization | Governed ingestion, storage, analytics or database operations |
| AI | Current AI fundamentals or role certification | Production AI design, evaluation, responsible use and monitoring |
| Security | Check the current catalog first | Identity, detection, logging, remediation, architecture or governance |
Before committing, compare three to five job postings in your target market. Record the services, tools and credentials that appear repeatedly, then choose the smallest certification-and-project combination that closes your actual skills gap.
How Microsoft’s credential system works
| Credential | Best use |
|---|---|
| Fundamentals | Build vocabulary and broad platform awareness |
| Associate | Validate capability in a defined job role |
| Expert | Validate advanced architecture or delivery responsibility |

Should you start with AZ-900?
No—not everyone should. AZ-900 is a sensible first step for cloud newcomers, students, nontechnical stakeholders and IT professionals who cannot yet explain subscriptions, regions, resource groups, identity, compute, storage and governance. Microsoft describes it as a common Azure starting point covering cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and management and governance: Azure Fundamentals.
Experienced administrators, developers or cloud engineers can move directly to a role exam if they can learn its objectives and perform the underlying tasks. AZ-900 is not a universal prerequisite, and passing it does not establish production administration, programming, architecture, security operations or DevOps ability.
The current AZ-900 study guide allocates 25–30% to cloud concepts, 35–40% to Azure architecture and services, and 30–35% to management and governance. The retrieved guide lists January 14, 2026 as its skills-measured date; always open the live guide before studying: AZ-900 study guide.

Administration path: Azure Administrator Associate
What it is
AZ-104: Microsoft Azure Administrator leads to the Azure Administrator Associate credential. It suits systems administrators, infrastructure engineers and operations professionals implementing, managing and monitoring Azure environments. Microsoft’s role page and study guide are here and here.

Skills to practice
- Resource groups, subscriptions, tags, locks, Policy and budgets.
- Virtual machines, containers and other compute services.
- Storage accounts, protection and lifecycle controls.
- Virtual networks, connectivity and traffic management.
- Microsoft Entra identity, role-based access and least privilege.
- Monitoring, alerts, backup and troubleshooting.
A practical sequence is optional AZ-900, a governed lab, AZ-104, then a work project or relevant Applied Skills assessment. Passing AZ-104 is evidence of measured knowledge, not proof that you have operated a production environment.
Architecture path: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
Microsoft currently requires Azure Administrator Associate plus AZ-305: Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions for Azure Solutions Architect Expert: certification requirements. AZ-305 covers identity, governance and monitoring; data storage; business continuity; and infrastructure design. The exam expects advanced networking, virtualization, identity, security, disaster recovery, data-platform, administration, development and DevOps knowledge: AZ-305 details.
Architecture readiness is more than memorizing services. Create an architecture decision record for a multi-tier workload that explains availability targets, security boundaries, recovery objectives, performance assumptions and cost choices. The English AZ-305 exam was updated April 17, 2026, so use the current study guide rather than an old course.
DevOps path: DevOps Engineer Expert
For AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions, Microsoft requires at least Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate: DevOps Engineer Expert. AZ-400 addresses processes and communication, source-control strategy, build and release pipelines, security and compliance, and instrumentation. Microsoft says candidates should have implemented both GitHub and Azure DevOps solutions: AZ-400 exam page.
Rank #3
An infrastructure route is AZ-104 → AZ-400; a developer route must use whatever current Azure developer credential Microsoft lists. The retrieved material scheduled an English AZ-400 update for July 27, 2026, so confirm the live objectives before paying for preparation. Build a pipeline with tests, secret management, approvals, deployment and monitoring to show the capability behind the badge.
Developer, data and AI routes require catalog checks
Azure development
Microsoft’s retrieved page states that Azure Developer Associate, its related exam and renewal assessments retired July 31, 2026: Azure Developer Associate. Do not buy an AZ-204 course or schedule it as a long-term plan unless Microsoft’s current catalog confirms a replacement or transitional policy.
Data
DP-900: Azure Data Fundamentals introduces core data concepts and Azure data services. It is optional, not a prerequisite. After it, select a current specialization—data engineering, database administration, analytics, data science or AI—based on the job you want. Data credentials change frequently, so avoid an unverified fixed ladder: DP-900.
AI
The retrieved AI-900 page scheduled AI-900 for retirement June 30, 2026 and identified AI-901 as its replacement: AI-900 exam page. Treat AI-900 as historical unless the live catalog says otherwise. Fundamentals can teach service literacy, but they do not replace programming, data engineering, model evaluation or production AI experience.
Rank #4
Security: verify the post-retirement route
Microsoft’s retirement schedule listed Azure Security Engineer Associate for retirement on August 31, 2026: credential retirement schedule. As of September 28, 2026, do not build a plan around AZ-500-related material without checking the live certification and exam pages. Choose a current credential or Applied Skills scenario that matches identity and access, security operations, cloud-security architecture, governance, risk and compliance, or application security.
Build experience alongside the credential
Pair the exam with one demonstrable project:
| Target | Project |
|---|---|
| Administrator | Deploy and govern a multi-tier workload with RBAC, Policy, tags, monitoring and backup. |
| Architect | Write an architecture decision record covering reliability, security, cost and disaster recovery. |
| DevOps | Build CI/CD with tests, secrets management, approvals and monitoring. |
| Data | Create a secured ingestion and analytics workflow with governance and cost controls. |
| AI | Build an AI workload with evaluation, responsible-AI controls, monitoring and access management. |
| Security | Document identity, logging, detection and remediation designs. |
These projects expose gaps that exam questions cannot: incident response, cost pressure, communication, secure deployment and operational trade-offs.
A six-phase study plan
- Define the role. Write the target title, recurring job-posting requirements and your skill gaps.
- Validate the credential. Open the certification page, prerequisite list, exam study guide, skills-measured date and retirement schedule.
- Learn concepts. Use Microsoft Learn modules and the official objectives; do not rely on memorized question banks.
- Build in Azure. Create and secure resources, deploy with portal and command-line tools, apply governance, monitor, troubleshoot and clean up.
- Test readiness. Take Microsoft’s free practice assessment, use the exam sandbox, map every measured skill to evidence and review weak domains: Microsoft Learn credentials hub.
- Schedule and track. Book only after the version, language, delivery method, accommodations, price and cancellation terms are confirmed. Record the renewal date immediately after passing.
Registration, scoring and language details
Register with a personal Microsoft account, connect it to your Microsoft Learn certification profile and avoid tying the record solely to a work or school account. Microsoft warns that organizational access can disappear when you leave an employer; the scheduling guidance appears on the AZ-305 page.

Costs and a sensible personal budget
At the time checked in August 2026, Microsoft displayed AZ-900 at $59 USD: price display. Associate and expert prices vary by proctoring country or region, taxes, promotions and eligibility; treat the checkout amount as the authoritative figure. There is no universal “Azure certification cost.”
- Microsoft Learn: core self-paced preparation, practice assessments and eligible renewal assessments are presented as free.
- Azure lab: use budgets and alerts, shut down compute and delete resource groups; compare the current free-account terms at Azure free account.
- Instructor-led training: useful when an employer pays or you need accountability and live troubleshooting; prices vary by provider and geography.
- Exam Replay: check the live offer and price on the certification page; the retrieved pages do not establish a universal amount.
- Delivery: compare online proctoring with a test center through Pearson VUE, including equipment, identification, language, cancellation and accommodation requirements.
An exam fee is poor value when you have no target role, study time or plan for hands-on work. Budget for labs and learning time, not just the test appointment.
Renewal and retirement rules
Microsoft says fundamentals certifications do not expire. Associate, expert and specialty certifications generally expire after one year. Eligible credentials can be renewed free through an online, unproctored, open-book Microsoft Learn assessment; the renewal window opens six months before expiration, and retakes are allowed until you pass before the deadline: renewal process and renewal FAQ.
Each certification renews separately; renewing a prerequisite does not automatically renew an expert credential. If a certification expires, you must earn it again through the required exam path. Retired credentials that were earned or renewed remain active on the transcript until their expiration, then move to historical status. Check the retirement page before purchasing any course.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Following a frozen ladder such as AZ-900 → AZ-104 → AZ-305 → AZ-400 even when your role needs only one branch.
- Buying material for AZ-204, AI-900 or AZ-500 without checking current retirement status.
- Using exam dumps instead of official objectives, practice assessments and labs.
- Collecting badges without a portfolio, troubleshooting evidence or cost and security decisions.
- Assuming a 700 score equals 70% or that a practice assessment predicts the live exam.
- Registering only through an employer account.
- Assuming prices, languages, providers or localized update dates are universal.
- Ignoring separate renewal dates after passing.
