Nationwide’s U.S. travel insurance certificates reviewed here offer two plans: Travel Prime and Travel Essential. Both cover several common travel risks, but their benefit maximums differ substantially. Those figures are policy limits—not guaranteed claim payments—and the certificate issued with your quote controls what is covered.
What does Nationwide travel insurance cover?
The reviewed U.S. certificates describe coverage for trip cancellation and interruption, travel delay, emergency medical expenses, emergency evacuation, repatriation of remains, baggage and personal effects, and baggage delay. Coverage applies only under the policy’s definitions, covered reasons, exclusions, deadlines, and documentation requirements.
Trip cancellation is not unrestricted cancellation: the reason for cancelling must meet the policy wording. Both certificates list cancellation benefits up to 100% of covered trip cost, subject to a maximum scheduled trip cost of $30,000 for Travel Prime and $10,000 for Travel Essential. Confirm the eligible trip cost shown in your quote and certificate.
Travel Prime vs. Travel Essential
The following are maximum benefit amounts per person per trip in Nationwide certificates issued in edition 03/2025. A maximum is not a promise to reimburse the full amount; eligibility and payment depend on the certificate’s terms and the claim.

Does Nationwide cover pre-existing medical conditions?
The Travel Prime certificate says its pre-existing-condition waiver applies when the plan is purchased within 21 days of the initial trip deposit date. The certificate’s exact statement is: “This Policy/Certificate of insurance includes coverage for Pre-existing Conditions when purchased within 21 days of the Initial Trip Deposit Date.” This timing condition does not by itself establish eligibility: the full definition, other waiver requirements, and your confirmation of coverage control. Review those terms before purchase.
Rank #2
The reviewed materials do not establish an equivalent waiver for Travel Essential. Do not assume the Prime provision applies to Essential; check the actual Essential certificate and quote.
Does Nationwide offer Cancel For Any Reason?
Travel Prime includes an optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) section. The option may require separate selection and payment, so verify that it appears on your confirmation of coverage. The reviewed certificate information does not establish the specific reimbursement limit or purchase and cancellation deadlines; consult the full CFAR section of the certificate issued with your quote rather than assuming a standard industry percentage or deadline.

CFAR is generally a partial reimbursement benefit, not a guarantee of a full refund. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners describes it as allowing a partial refund—50% to 75% of total trip price—as general consumer guidance; that range is not a Nationwide benefit promise. See the NAIC travel insurance guidance.
What to check before buying
- Covered cancellation and interruption reasons: Read the covered-reason wording and exclusions. A plan with cancellation coverage does not mean you can cancel for any reason unless an applicable optional benefit says so.
- Medical and evacuation limits: Compare the limits with the trip and any existing health coverage. The NAIC notes that ordinary health insurance may not cover overseas treatment or repatriation; check both your health plan and the travel certificate.
- Baggage sublimits: The per-article and combined-article caps can limit reimbursement even when the overall baggage maximum is higher than the value of an individual lost item.
- Trip cost and purchase timing: Make sure the trip cost and dates in the quote are accurate. Timing from the initial deposit can matter for time-sensitive benefits such as the Travel Prime pre-existing-condition waiver.
- Optional benefits: Travel Prime’s certificate includes optional CFAR and rental-car damage sections. Confirm any option you want is selected and listed on the confirmation; do not infer inclusion from the plan name.
- Policy and jurisdiction: Confirm that you are reviewing the U.S. certificate, its state-specific form, and the insurer named for your purchase. Nationwide also appears in a separate UK bank-account-linked travel insurance product provided by Aviva; that product is not the U.S. Travel Prime or Travel Essential policy described here.
How much does Nationwide travel insurance cost?
There is no reliable general price to quote from the policy certificates. The premium and eligibility require an individual quote using trip and traveler information. Compare the quoted price alongside the covered trip cost, applicable limits, exclusions, and any optional benefits selected—not just the plan name.

Where to confirm your coverage
Use the certificate and confirmation issued for your own purchase as the controlling documents. The reviewed Nationwide certificates are edition 03/2025 and describe policy terms, not an individualized quote. Before buying, verify the current form, state availability, named insurer, benefit schedule, selected options, and any applicable deadlines in your quote documents.
