Re:

National Public Data Is Back—but the Privacy Risk Is Different Now

The National Public Data domain has returned as a people-search site. Here is what is known about the new operator, the old breach, profile removal and the limits of an opt-out.

Short answer: The nationalpublicdata.com domain is active again in 2026 as a people-search directory. Its current pages say a new operator is unrelated to Jerico Pictures, Inc., the former operator associated with the 2024 National Public Data breach. That separation has not been independently established in the materials available, and nothing reviewed proves that the revived site is serving the stolen Social Security-number database.

The privacy problem is still substantial. The current service makes public-record-derived names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, relatives and age-related information easier to find and combine. Removing one profile can reduce exposure on this site, but it cannot undo the old breach, retrieve copied data or remove information from the wider data-broker ecosystem.

What “National Public Data is back” means

Two different developments are being conflated:

  • The former National Public Data operation was run by Jerico Pictures, Inc. and was associated with a major 2024 security incident.
  • The same brand and domain now host a people-search service. The current site describes itself as a new platform and says it has no affiliation with Jerico Pictures, its officers, websites or databases (about page; opt-out page).

Those statements are the current operator’s descriptions, not independent proof of ownership, corporate separation or database lineage. Domain continuity is not the same as corporate continuity, and neither establishes that the old breach database is being displayed today.

What happened in the 2024 breach

The former breach notice says attempted access may have begun in late December 2023, with possible information leaks in April 2024 and summer 2024 (security-incident notice). The suspected fields included names, email addresses, phone numbers, mailing addresses and Social Security numbers.

Public discussion often refers to 2.9 billion “records.” That is a reported record or data-row count, not proof that 2.9 billion unique people were victims. Records may be duplicated, outdated or linked to people outside the United States, and the notice does not establish that every affected person had every listed field exposed. A congressional investigation also questioned the timing of the company’s disclosures after public reports and litigation (investigative report).

California’s Privacy Protection Agency later pursued Jerico Pictures over data-broker registration. The agency said the company registered 230 days late and, in May 2025, ordered it to pay $46,000 (enforcement action; order). That administrative fine concerned registration and fees; it was not compensation to breach victims.

What the revived site publishes

The current homepage and about materials describe a free people-search or white-pages service that aggregates public records. Indexed profile pages show categories such as:

  • current and former addresses;
  • phone numbers and email addresses;
  • relatives and associated people;
  • age or birth-date information; and
  • links to other people-search or records categories.

Examples of the profile format are visible on indexed pages such as this profile. Do not republish a real person’s full contact details merely to demonstrate the issue.

The opt-out page says the current service does not publish Social Security numbers, credit-card numbers or bank-account numbers (opt-out information). That is a claim by the current operator, not an independent security audit. The site also says its information is not for employment, credit, insurance, housing or other regulated decisions (terms); a disclaimer does not prevent misuse.

Why “public” information can create private harm

Public availability and low privacy risk are not the same thing. Government records and scattered directories may each reveal little. Aggregating them into one searchable profile changes the practical exposure:

  • Discoverability: a stranger can find a person without knowing which courthouse, directory or broker holds the original record.
  • Linkage: current and former addresses, relatives, phones and email accounts can be combined into a personal map.
  • Scale: free, predictable profile pages are easier for casual users and automated scrapers to search.
  • Persistence: copies may remain in search indexes, archives, broker databases or scraped datasets after a page is removed.

That combination can facilitate stalking, harassment, impersonation, phishing, account-recovery attacks and social engineering. It can be especially dangerous for domestic-abuse survivors, people in protective programs, minors’ relatives and public-facing officials. Accuracy is another risk: stale or mismatched public records can attach one person’s history to another.

Is the current site the same company?

The responsible answer is not established from the current pages alone. The site says it is a “completely new platform” unrelated to Jerico Pictures and has never collected or stored Social Security numbers (about page; opt-out page). A definitive ownership assessment would require verifiable information about:

  • the domain-transfer or registration history;
  • the data suppliers and database lineage;
  • the date and terms of any transition; and
  • security testing, access controls and incident-response practices.

Until those facts are documented, treat the site’s independence as an attributed claim. A profile on the revived site also does not prove that the person’s Social Security number was in the 2024 breach.

How to remove a profile from the current site

The current opt-out page describes a URL-based process. Exact labels can change, so follow the live instructions:

  1. Search nationalpublicdata.com for your profile.
  2. Open the exact profile and copy its complete, unique URL.
  3. Paste that URL into the opt-out form.
  4. Enter an email address on the following page and complete the confirmation steps.
  5. If automation fails, provide the profile hyperlink for manual removal, as the site instructs.

Before submitting, save a screenshot and the URL. Keep confirmation messages, then revisit the exact page after the stated removal period. Search again using name variations, middle initials, former addresses and other states; one person can have duplicate listings.

Use restraint with identity documents. The form requires an email address, and the privacy policy says contact or suppression submissions may include names, email addresses, messages and other voluntarily supplied information and may be retained for up to two years. That is policy language, not an independently audited retention practice (privacy policy, updated February 3, 2026).

What an opt-out cannot fix

  • It cannot revoke the 2024 breach or retrieve data criminals already copied.
  • It does not remove records from government sources, other people-search sites or private broker databases.
  • It does not guarantee immediate removal of search-engine snippets, caches or scraped copies.
  • It cannot fix compromised passwords, fraudulent accounts or account takeover.
  • It cannot prevent a listing from returning after a later data refresh.

Removal from this domain is therefore one suppression request, not a whole-identity cleanup.

Protection for people concerned about the 2024 breach

If Social Security-number exposure is possible, prioritize measures that address new-credit fraud rather than relying on the revived site’s profile search.

  • Freeze credit: Place freezes separately with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A freeze is generally stronger than a fraud alert for blocking many new-credit applications, but it does not stop every kind of identity theft.
  • Consider a fraud alert: The former breach notice described an initial one-year alert. It tells creditors to take additional steps before opening new credit.
  • Review reports: Check all three credit reports for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, addresses and collections.
  • Use the IRS IP PIN: An IRS Identity Protection PIN helps protect federal tax filing identity, not credit files or people-search listings.
  • Report suspected misuse: Start at IdentityTheft.gov, preserve notices and bank correspondence, and keep a dated incident timeline.
  • Harden accounts: Use unique passwords in a password manager, multifactor authentication and carrier-account protections. Treat messages that cite an old address, relative or partial Social Security number as possible social engineering.

What the site’s privacy posture still leaves unanswered

A useful evaluation should look beyond whether an opt-out button exists:

  • Does the operator identify a verifiable legal entity and physical business address?
  • Can it explain the original sources, refresh schedule and correction process for each profile?
  • Does one request suppress duplicate records, or only one URL?
  • Are identity checks proportionate and are submitted details minimized?
  • Is there a vulnerability-reporting channel, meaningful security documentation or an independent audit?
  • Are profile URLs and structured data removed from search indexes when a listing is suppressed?

The current pages do not provide enough independently verifiable information to call the service safe. Nor does the privacy policy’s statement that it does not sell or trade information submitted directly by visitors fully explain how displayed public-record data is sourced, licensed, distributed or monetized (privacy policy).

Should you pay for a removal service?

Paid services can automate requests across multiple brokers, but they are optional. First use credit freezes and the free FTC and IRS resources when those fit your risk. Services such as DeleteMe, Incogni, Optery and Aura differ in broker coverage, monitoring, bundled security tools, family support and evidence of completed removals. None can promise deletion from every broker, public record, breach archive, criminal marketplace or search engine.

Current prices, renewal rates, covered-broker lists, cancellation rules and insurance terms change frequently and should be checked directly before purchase. A subscription may be a poor fit if you only need one profile removed, do not want to provide identifying information to another vendor, or primarily need protection from fraudulent credit rather than directory exposure.

Bottom line

National Public Data’s name and domain have returned, but that does not establish that the former breach company or its stolen database has returned. The current site says it is a separate operator offering searchable public-record information; that claim remains largely self-reported. The privacy risk is nevertheless real because aggregation, discoverability and persistence can make ordinary records actionable for abuse. Remove any current profile carefully, freeze credit when appropriate, secure your accounts and treat the old breach as a separate problem that an opt-out cannot solve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does finding my name on the revived site prove I was in the 2024 breach?

No. The current site says it is unrelated to the former operator, and its profiles are described as public-record-derived. A profile there cannot establish whether your Social Security number appeared in the 2024 incident.

Will removing my profile remove my information everywhere?

No. The process addresses a listing on this site. Copies may remain with other brokers, search engines, public agencies, archives or criminals.

Is the current website independently verified as safe?

No independent security audit or complete ownership and data-provenance record is established by the current pages reviewed.
