Aerobotix announced on May 18, 2022, that it had installed its 40th robotic system for U.S. missile manufacturing. The company said unnamed prime contractors were using its systems for inspection, sanding, coating, masking and geometry work on interceptor, cruise, air-to-air and hypersonic missiles. It linked the milestone to rising production requirements and the Missile Defense Agency’s then-proposed $9.6 billion fiscal 2023 budget. The announcement was a historical company milestone—not evidence of a direct MDA contract, a disclosed production increase or a current installation total.

What Aerobotix actually announced

The release described the 40th robotic system serving the U.S. missile-manufacturing industry. That wording does not necessarily mean the 40th robot arm, production line or installation at one contractor. Aerobotix is a systems integrator, so a turnkey system can combine robot arms, end-of-arm tooling, sensors, metrology, paint-delivery equipment, fixtures, safety enclosures, motion-positioning hardware, controls, software, operator interfaces, training and support.

The announcement was distributed on May 18, 2022. It did not identify the customer, missile program, site, contract value, system configuration, acceptance-test results or measured production-rate increase. Aerobotix said the systems had been delivered to several prime defense-contractor sites and that much of the work was commercially confidential. The contemporaneous release is available from Business Wire and Aerobotix’s original announcement.

Why missile production was part of the story

Aerobotix framed the milestone around expanded U.S. demand for regional and homeland missile defenses, surge production at prime contractors and increased output of advanced weapons. Its release cited the MDA’s fiscal 2023 budget request of $9.6 billion, following an $8.9 billion fiscal 2022 request and a company-cited congressional increase that brought fiscal 2022 funding to $10.4 billion.

Those are historical budget figures, not the MDA’s current 2026 budget. They also provide context rather than proof of a specific Aerobotix award. MDA programs are the direct budget backdrop, while cruise missiles, air-to-air missiles and hypersonic systems can be funded or managed through other Department of Defense organizations. The announcement does not establish that every system supporting those categories was purchased with MDA money.

What the robotic systems were designed to do

Structured-light scanning and inspection

Aerobotix said demand was increasingly focused on automated testing, scanning and quality operations. Robotic structured-light scanners can capture surface geometry and compare it with CAD data through a scan-to-CAD workflow. The resulting inspection record can show whether a part is within specified dimensional limits and preserve evidence for quality review.

The company called this record a “digital twin.” In the material made public, that term is best understood as a digital geometric or inspection representation of a part. It does not establish a complete lifecycle digital-twin architecture linking design, manufacturing, maintenance and operational data. Aerobotix’s current inspection page describes structured-light scanning, scan-to-CAD workflows and sensor partnerships: aerobotix.net/expertise/inspection/.

Active-force-compliant sanding

Force-compliant sanding lets a robot adjust contact pressure as tooling follows a surface. That can help accommodate normal part variation, reduce the risk of gouging and make material removal more repeatable. Aerobotix did not publish a specific finish improvement, cycle-time reduction or labor saving for the 40th installation.

Performance coatings and painting

Robotic coating work can place people farther from hazardous chemicals and repetitive motions while maintaining a programmed spray path. Missile components may also require controlled coverage, curing and thickness. Aerobotix’s later materials describe robotic painting, sanding, curing, coating delivery and non-contact coating-thickness measurement.

Outer-mold-line sculpting

Outer-mold-line sculpting refers to producing or correcting a component’s external geometry so it meets the intended dimensional or aerodynamic profile. The announcement says Aerobotix had designed and programmed systems for this work; it does not say that complete missile bodies were robotically machined end to end.

Masking and measurement

The company also listed automated masking-tape application and non-contact coating-thickness measurement. These operations can reduce repetitive manual work and create more consistent process records, but the public release did not provide tolerance, throughput or scrap-rate data.

What “tech up” means in a production facility

A production cell is more than a robot arm. Aerobotix’s current methodology describes process development, design reviews, robotic risk analysis, in-house integration and testing, site installation, final acceptance testing, production start-up support and operator and maintenance training. • Programmable logic controllers, safety-rated controls and an operator station.
  • Metrology and inspection software connected to the applicable CAD revision and quality records.
  • Factory and site acceptance testing, documentation, training and an ongoing spares plan.

The manufacturing reasons for adopting such a cell are familiar: higher required throughput, difficult recruiting and retention, hazardous or ergonomically demanding tasks, repeatable coating and geometry, improved traceability and the need to retrofit existing facilities. They are rationales for automation, not proof that every contractor had the same labor shortage or bottleneck.

Claims and what the public evidence supports

Claim What is established Important qualification
40th installation Aerobotix announced its 40th robotic system for U.S. missile manufacturing on May 18, 2022. Historical company announcement; customer, site and program were not named.
MDA budget context The release cited a $9.6 billion fiscal 2023 request, an $8.9 billion fiscal 2022 request and a company-cited $10.4 billion fiscal 2022 total after congressional action. These are historical figures, not a current 2026 budget and not evidence of a direct Aerobotix-MDA contract.
Missile categories The company said its systems supported interceptor, cruise, air-to-air and hypersonic missile production. No individual program or customer was identified.
Durability Aerobotix reported that integrated FANUC robots could operate for more than 60,000 hours before a major failure. Company-reported and not independently validated in the available coverage.
Return on investment The release described a strong return on investment. No purchase price, payback period, utilization, labor baseline, scrap comparison or measured production gain was supplied.

The 60,000-hour statement needs careful reading

Aerobotix’s release associated more than 60,000 hours before a major failure with more than 10 years of continuous 24-hour operation. Those statements are not mathematically equivalent. Ten years at 24 hours per day is 87,600 hours; 60,000 hours is about 6.85 years of uninterrupted operation. The company may have been referring to a duty cycle, maintenance regime, expected service life or another definition of operating time. Buyers should request the underlying reliability definition, maintenance assumptions and warranty terms rather than treating the two figures as one proven runtime claim.

Why commercial off-the-shelf hardware still needs defense integration

Aerobotix said it uses commercial components where possible. Standard robot platforms can make replacement parts easier to source, give maintenance teams a familiar controller ecosystem and reduce the risk of designing every element from scratch. They can also support common training and software tools.

Commercial hardware does not automatically become a qualified defense-production system. The integrator and customer still need process validation, configuration control, safety engineering, cybersecurity controls, hazardous-environment compliance, metrology calibration, documentation and acceptance testing. Aerobotix’s materials emphasize maintenance support, emergency service, training, software and aftermarket upgrades; its spares and upgrades information is at aerobotix.net/spares-upgrades/.

What has changed since the 2022 milestone

Aerobotix now says it has installed more than 170 turnkey robotic systems worldwide, compared with the more-than-130 figure in the 2022 release and a more-than-155 figure shown on an older milestone page. The current number should not be used to reinterpret the 40th missile-manufacturing installation: it is a later, worldwide company total, and the company does not say that all 170-plus systems support missile production. See Aerobotix’s current overview.

The company’s current site lists painting, sanding, inspection, mobile robotics, process development, integration, installation, training and support. It also describes a later six-robot hypersonic-component line combining scanning, sanding, painting, curing and measurement: aerobotix.net/aerobotix-unveils-first-fully-robotic-hypersonic-missile-production-line/. That is a subsequent example of capability, not evidence about the configuration or performance of the 2022 installation.

When this kind of automation makes financial and operational sense

Strong-fit conditions

  • Repetitive, structured work with enough volume to justify a dedicated cell.
  • Hazardous, ergonomically difficult or difficult-to-staff operations.
  • Strict requirements for coating thickness, surface finish or geometry.
  • A stable product definition and available CAD and inspection data.
  • A facility able to support safety, ventilation, curing, controls and maintenance.

Poor-fit conditions

  • Low production volume or frequent product changes.
  • Parts that vary too widely for a practical automated path.
  • Processes requiring judgment that cannot be reliably encoded.
  • Insufficient robotics, metrology or maintenance capability at the customer.
  • Qualification, cybersecurity or configuration-control requirements beyond the integrator’s demonstrated experience.
  • A cell that would become a bottleneck upstream or downstream.

Questions a contractor should answer before buying

  1. What are the baseline cycle time, defect rate, rework rate and labor hours?
  2. What production rate, accuracy and utilization will the supplier guarantee?
  3. Which part variants, tooling changes and CAD revisions can the cell handle?
  4. How are sensors calibrated, and how are inspection records linked to the correct part and specification?
  5. What facility modifications, hazardous-location controls and fire-protection systems are required?
  6. What are the factory- and site-acceptance criteria?
  7. Who owns the robot programs, CAD-derived paths, process data and documentation?
  8. What domestic spares, emergency support, training and software upgrades are included?
  9. How are controlled, classified or export-sensitive data protected?
  10. What payback remains realistic after integration, validation, maintenance and expected utilization?

Bottom line on the 40th installation

Aerobotix’s milestone showed that robotic inspection, surface preparation and coating were moving into production-support roles in U.S. missile manufacturing by 2022. It did not publicly establish the identity of the contractors, the missile programs, the system price, a direct MDA procurement relationship or a measured return on investment. For current context, use the company’s more-than-170 worldwide installation claim separately from the historical 40th missile-industry system.
